New issue after win7 updates (oct-nov): Monitors won't go into standby

Recommended Posts

So, long story short, I've always had my monitors go into standby immediately when I press Win+L to lock my computer. Ever since I updated windows the other day, they've not been staying in standby mode for more than a few seconds.

Troubleshooting this, I've also found that (setting my "Turn off the display" option in power options to 1 minute), my monitors will not go into standby mode. It's like there's something that's registering as mouse/kb input but nothing is happening on screen (while waiting for it to go into standby after 1 minute).

I've tried unplugging my keyboard/mouse, still won't go into standby. Anyone have any suggestions? It'd nice if there were a way to find out exactly what is interrupting the standby timer!

Edit: So it turns out that Chrome (more specifically, a tab with an imgur page/gif posted below) is what was causing this to happen. Weird, huh?

Check you NIC settings? See if it's waking your PC. Sounds like a device might be preventing your PC from going to standby.

It's monitor standby that's the issue (I don't use sleep). I did try it though (among with tons of other stuff) and unfortunately, no go.

No offence, but I have never seen this behaviour.

Do you set something to make this happen?

As an aside, you can do a "powercfg -waketimers" to see if anything is keeping the device awake. (Counts for monitor standby as well)

Wow, this is bizarre. After a lot of trial and error and process of elimination... turns out it was Chrome kicking my monitors out of standby mode.

More specifically, it was a certain page/gif I had open in a sea of tabs: http://i.imgur.com/85uLa9l.gifv

Yes, I use a neat little executable nircmd.exe that lets you do all sorts of things to turn the monitor off on workstation lock (and keep doing so every minute or so in case something turns them back on), and subsequently, end said process when the workstation is unlocked. Allows me to just hit Win+L and walk away (or lie down and sleep) without having to wait for my monitors to shut off (or shutting them off by hand - which is a problem because I use one as a usb hub which my kb/mouse are plugged in to).
