Any idea why my videocard is causing this effect?

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a MSI R9 270X, I have the latest drivers from AMD and it's powered by a Corsair HX520w.

I have noticed that I get a strange effect on any kind of white/grey gradient. It happens in the game War Thunder when flying through clouds, which I've tried to catch but it's most noticeable in the second screenshot below.

I can't really figure out why it might be doing it, does anyone have any ideas? My previous card was an ancient 7800GT and it didn't have this problem. My monitor is set to True Colour (32-bit) too, fwiw.

Pardon my ignorance, playing over citrix?

No, that's for work but it's when the effect seems most noticeable. It's difficult to get a good screenshot in game, but it's very noticeable when moving.

The second screenshot looks like you're running it on 16-bit colour.

Once I'm connected, it's fine. I can view photos and other images with no problem, is it possible that just that section of the login is 16-bit?

I'm not sure if this would capture the error or not, but since the issue is more viewable when moving could you use something like FRAPS to capture a short video of the issue?

That's weird, I recorded a video clip and it's still not very clear from the video. I tried to take a photo of my screen using my phone, which seems to capture it better. The bottom half is camera/display distortion so can be ignored, but the top half of the picture where the edges of the clouds have a weird oil like effect is what I see during the game.

Uh... So the last picture you posted is taken from a phone or something? That doesn't help us... Are you sure its not just your monitor? The very first screenshot looked fine.  The reason why I say this is that if it doesnt appear to external users as a rendering error, then its not a rendering error which means its something else, which would be the monitor.

You would need to record it directly from the computer, which as suggested you should use FRAPS.

You tried fiddling with the AMD settings?

I haven't, I've just left them as default. I'm not really sure what settings I should mess around with.

Yea, I was surprised when it didn't come up in FRAPS. I just checked this thread on my macbook, and the screenshot looks fine. If I look at it on my PC monitor then the first screenshot looks quite different and has the weird oil effect around it... I'll mess around with my monitor settings a bit more, I hope I don't need to buy a new one...

I have read about this issue before.

If Fraps did indeed take the picture it might not show the issue. I cannot recall how to explain it in technical terms but what you see and what FRAPS sees are 2 different things.

Are you running 14.12? Did you clean properly when you went from Nvidia to AMD? (Preferably with DDU)

Yea, I think I know what you mean. I ran DDU from safe mode and restarted before installing 14.12. My monitor is a Dell U2410 if that helps at all.

I think it may be a monitor issue, or more specifically, the specification of the monitor.

It's something to do with the 'ms' or something. It causes "ghosting" on certain tone shifts.

I get it on my 7-year-old Samsung Pebble 22" monitor when I, for example, look at a bright sun in a game. "Banding" often occurs when I do.

If it's the same thing I'm describing, screenshots won't show it. But a physical photo (or even better, video) should do.

You could always try a different cable but I personally hate such suggestions. (Pardon Elliot, just saw your reply and you make a valid point)

I googled for this issue but came up short. However I do recall seeing it somewhere before.

Try the AMD 3D graphics settings first. Maybe turning everything to low / high. Min / Max.

I was using a DVI to DVI cable and just tried swapping it for a DVI to HDMI cable and it seems to have fixed the issue with the oil issue, which is great! The screenshot that I first posted looks normal now, I can see why people were confused, haha.

Everything seems a little darker and more red now, but at least I know it's an issue with the cable... Sorry for wasting anyones time, I should have known better and tried that earlier. It was just a bit strange that it never seemed to be a problem until switching videocards, so I assumed it was related to that.

Issue with AMD*

Think of the cable fix as a workaround : P. Not that I am against the fix! Thanks Elliot!

If your monitor have something to make the response time artificially "better" (usually called grey to grey) try to turn that off in the settings. The name of the setting change from one company to another but the name of the setting should imply that your monitor will be magically "faster". Try to turn that off with my old samsung monitor it caused many problems in many games notably in WoW.

You're right. Now to order another DVI to HDMI cable, as I was using it to output to my tv as a second monitor.
