Powerline or Wireless for gaming?

Recommended Posts

We just got our broadband upgraded from 50mb to the 152mb package with Virgin Media. Running an Ethernet cable from where the router is would requiring drilling which the landlord won't permit. My gaming and work area is in the room directly above the router, so it's say 10 feet with a floor between it and my desktop. I'm wondering whether upgrading my existing powerline ethernet adapters would be best, or just going with a solid wireless N setup. My existing powerline adapters are only giving me about 70-80mbit throughtput and the latency just to my router through them isn't good:

Any thoughts on whether I should get some new powerline adapters, or should I just buy a decent access point and wireless PCI card?

Thanks.

Wireless. Wouldn't use power line unless the wireless was really bad in the area.

Powerline has lower latency than wireless.

That said, his/her latency is high going just to the router, even for powerline.

My powerline latency is lower than my wifi, and my wifi is extremely low to the router, even with a mediocre connection:

My wireless is between 1 and 2ms. Hardly enough to cause issues with gaming. Only reason I said that was because you can be anywhere with wireless..You aren't tethered to a power outlet. Xbone, xbox and quite a few computers and devices are all connected to wireless too.

There are other ways to run ethernet cable that don't require drilling. Are there any heat vents close to router? It is pretty easy to snake a cable through the heat ducts. Just start at the upper room and fish it down. Depending on the distance you can also route the cable along the baseboards around the room. They do make a flat ethernet cable in various colors that is ideal for that application.

Powerline all the way. I have been doing that since about 2008. Wireless is just too unreliable unless you are sitting right next to the router. And if your going to do that you might as well plug in via ethernet. Gaming over wireless is just asking for trouble.

powerline is considered to be better afaik, however, I have had no problems with online gaming when it comes to wireless USB adapters and PCI adapters.

I use both and I get better latency with Powerline.  My PS4 is hooked up via Powerline, I don't need it to be mobile.

Now the OP definitely has an issue going on...
