Email redirected - Is it kept on the "first server?"

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Suppose I want to get rid of my gmail account wink.gif and I set up redirection to the new address on a new domain...

How does this work? If an email is sent to my gmail, is it stored and then forwarded to the new address or does it get "bounced" to the new address without touching Gmails storage? First option seems creepy. Second one seems nice.smile.gif

Gmail is really just an example. Im interested in learning if the email can still be traced and read by the first hops.

Many thanks to you all.

As far as Im aware it is stored on GMail and forwarded to your other email address and looking at the final email header will display both addresses

A copy of email will be stored on the server and it will be detected and forward secondary copy to your new address if you have it setup in the settings.

If you don't want it stored on the server, then do not use THAT email address, simple.

It depends on the e-mail server/service. Some will redirect and not keep a copy, others won't, and others give you an option.

I'm not sure what Gmail does as I don't have a Gmail account. But I'd check your settings.

If your asking "can it" then sure their server accepted the mail, and then says oh I need to send this to billy@xyz.com

So if I sent a postcard to your house and on the post card I wrote, hey put this in an envelope and send it to Susan at 123 Street, you clearly could read the post card if you wanted too past the part where I said mail it to Susan.  You could also just take a copy of it if you wanted.

This is how email works..  Now does the first mail server care to read it or copy it?  Do you really care -- your sending it through the internet, is it encrypted.  Do a traceroute from your machine to your mail server - in theory every single hop you take could be sniffing and read your email if they wanted too if your sending it via just plain jane unencrypted smtp.
