MSI R9 290 and it might be too much thermal grease spread over the GPU core which outside of the part shouldn't have contact with it. Do you think that's the culprit? Because technically the fans still spin and believe the gpu didn't get any scratches or accidentally damage. The problem is once boot up it didn't even show any sign of motherboard logo. The monitor is working fine after testing with another computer and changing the PCI lanes didn't fix it  :(

The GPU is running but it unable to display anything to the monitor at all during boot up. Switching BIOS doesn't help and don't have IGPU. Any idea what's wrong?  :(

Maybe connected to wrong DVI port and have a TV connected with HDMI.

Try switching to the other DVI port if your monitor is connected on a DVI port and you have a TV connected via HDMI.

Or maybe the monitor is not the default display in windows and you have a TV connected. If the monitor is not the default display the boot will display on the TV connected via HDMI. Go in screen resolution to see if the monitor is the default display.

I would try either a different connection (does the monitor show a cable connected), or remove the thermal paste and use a smaller amount

Same question as above

If you can get intio BIOS, what's your issue?

You've obviously got some display output if you can get into BIOS, so its not the card itself.

Most probably driver issues if windows isn't displaying anything, try tapping F8 as you boot and get into safe mode or recovery mode etc.. then you can try un-installing and  re-installing drivers.

Why would you think there is too much thermal grease unless you took off the GPU heatsink and added more yourself?..MSI is very unlikely to make that mistake in production.

OK so if i understand right  the gpu don't post at all even after the boot process? But you are fairly sure it is working?

If you have a TV connected via HDMI your problem is probably there. Disconnect the TV. Boot. Reconnect TV. Set monitor as default display and switch to this display. Next time you boot windows will post on this display.

Most of the time windows will set the HDMI display as the default display.

I gingerly re-applied the thermal grease and it might too much that spread to the area which shouldn't have any contact. So i'm curious whether that have anything to do with it and it's not possible to get into BIOS as the monitor flat out doesn't response from the GPU. I will post a picture later to provide more details.

wat?

edit: why you did that? well anyways if you can get into BIOS then the card at least does work; can you remove all the external connectors and just leave 1 monitor connected into the GPU?

Yup, The monitor have absolutely no response from the GPU despite it's running with fans and corrected all the settings. i can only switch the gpu bios with an option of 1 or 2 beside the power connector but still doesn't fix. :(

f5 f8 cant remember but you need to find safe mode in the pc or run it with the disk in even and boot to the part were it says repair pc and run that for an hour see if i comes back  :/

ok like i said if you have more than one display connected your problem is probably there. Disconnect all display. Boot. Reconnect all displays and then set the proper display as default in screen resolution.

If you just have one display connected and you can't see anything even during bios post then there's a high chance that the gpu is dead. Might try it on another PC to be sure but ...

I only used HDMI and it's likely dead but will try everything in 2-3 days to make sure it can revive before purchasing a new one.

Here's a couple of question you should answer in a single post to make things easier.

How many displays do you have connected and on which port of the gpu each display is connected?

Do the computer output to any display during bios POST? if yes on which display (port)?

Do the computer output to any display during windows boot process? If yes on which display (port)?

Do the computer output to any display on the windows login screen? If yes on witch display (port)?

Brand and model of MB?

Brand and model of GPU?

Brand and model of PSU?

Which version of windows?

On which PCI-E lane is the GPU connected?

Do you have more than one GPU activated (including any IGPU)?

I know you already answered some of those but it would make things easier to have the answers in a single post.

This GPU is likely still under warranty.

Yeh I must say 1st off kinda silly move, never mess with things when they're still in warranty unless you really know what your doing or are happy to throw money down the toilet.

But OK, so it was the GPU Bios you were on about not the Mobo's so thats a start the card is most probably the issue (could also be PSU as someone suggested) how many watts is your PSU?

Thermal compound on other parts of the card shouldn't cause any issues, I remember I put too much on an old CPU the 1st time i did it, splurged all out the side over the mobo but was fine. But who knows if you've done any other damage be removing the cooler.

Also do you have another GPU you can try just to make sure its not the monitor? and/or laptop console.

And finally try DVI/VGA, HDMI has a whole load of content security protection (HDCP) that could interfere with it displaying properly.

you have destroyed it see that perfectly cut steel rectangle on the top with the past on that is your die and if you look you have broken off the right hand side of the die its knackered reassemble it and take it back clean it up and ask for an exchange in shop that die is the gpu and half of its missing this occurs when the cooler block is not seated correctly you might get away with it  :/

I tried everything before posted this thread. My last resort will be RMA  :)

Are you sure? Then it's possible that they might replace it while still under warranty since it happened naturally??

I doubt you can RMA that now. Taking off the heatsink normally voids warranty.

yeah clean it up best you can rebox it and tell them you tryed it out as you have been away for a while or busy plugged it in turned it on and nothing not even a beep and they might let you exchange it but wipe all that silver off as well as much as you can polish the bugger then have ago at swapping it  :)
