I've used both and if you have an iPhone the iPad will work very nice with the whole ecosystem. If you need more power or want to play non-tablet games then go for the surface.

Form what you say get an iPad.  iPad for mucking about and a Surface for work.

Watching movies, youtube videos, reading articles, cooking help, calender and maybe some light gaming.

In that case, choose the one that the majority of your friends/family have.

If you have a Mac or iPhone I'd say choose the iPad.

If you like to be trendy I'd say choose the Surface.

Do you want a computer or do you want a big phone?

Here in UCSB, I have already seen a lot of Surface Pro 3 and a few Surface Pro 2.  In fact, I have already seen one Surface 3.

It's hard to go a day without seeing at least one Surface.

That's the key question.  I have both (well, iPad 3 and SP3) and the iPad is strictly for games or to tether.  My Surface does everything I need it to.

The iPad is a media consumption device and that's it. When it comes to getting work done it's rather limited.

The Surface 3 on the other hand also is a media consumption device, but can also be a productivity device. You can browse YouTube, update your Facebook status, and check your email like on an iPad, but with the Surface you can also make professional presentation in PowerPoint, edit photos in Photoshop and play desktop games (not all, but a vast majority).

The Surface undoubtedly wins here. Both cost around the same, but the Surface brings much more to the table.

Surface is for productivity (Word, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator... ). If that's something that you need then get the Surface.

But the iPad does have more "tablet" apps and games (time waster).

Maybe not. The SP3 can run Bluestacks, meaning you have access to Android apps as well. Not native, of course, but a decent solution for a lot of the games.

Hi Max! The Surface 3 is definitely nothing that attracts me to be frank! I have been using iPads for years and I really do not think that anything else can beat their reliability! I am really not willing to change for the Surfaces 3 or any other tablet that might come up! I suggest you go for the latest model of the iPad, you will be more than satisfied!

That is just the dumbest thing I have read today. What modern computing device isn't completely reliable? OK, the MacPros I have to use at work aren't but we have an engineering department to sort that out. Apart from that, all decent priced consumer electronics are reliable these days. If you are spending $500 or more, whatever you get will be every bit as reliable as any iPad.

Not always true. I've had laptops that have broken down, even though I'm very careful with my electronics. I had a Toshiba laptop break down one day before its warranty expired. Ironic - but I have both an iPad Air (1st gen.) and a Surface Pro 2. Both are reliable, but the iPad definitely has its quirks. Sometimes it just won't rotate at all. It's highly annoying. Surface Pro 2 has some developed some tracking issues with a pen.

I can only imagine you are either unluckier than most or actually not very careful with your technology. The last time I had an issue with any laptop of mine was in 2007. It was caused by a faulty nVidia chipset that affected 9 manufacturers. I was glad mine was a Dell because it broke when I was overseas but the Dell tech was at my door two hours after I got home with a new mobo. Since then I have had another six laptops and three tablets and not had the tiniest problem. In fact, the laptop I bought in 2009 to replace that one is still going strong at my band-mate's place and we still use it as our back-up machine for live performances and in the studio. And I don't think I'm particularly careful at all. I throw my tablets around and stuff them into bags without much care, although I do put some care into choosing good bags.
