patseguin Global Moderator Posted July 31, 2015 Global Moderator Share Posted July 31, 2015 Anyone know the official word on upgrading from an old Windows 8.1 TechNet key from before they discontinued TechNet? I have my main rig and my HTPC both running Windows 10 and upgraded from the same TechNet key. Is there anywhere I can go to check my activation status to make sure I got my free upgrade? I just don't want to find out in a year that I didn't do it right and miss my free upgrade. I show I am activated so I must be, right?
xxxxxx.xxxxxx
I would think that if the machine is showing as activated then according to Microsoft server you are in fact activated as genuine.
n_K
I think legally you should only be using those technet keys for development and testing, not for any other use: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/subscriptions/cc137104.aspx
Depicus
A "friend" activated his Windows 8.1 Technet version without a problem
Brandon H Supervisor Posted July 31, 2015 Supervisor Share Posted July 31, 2015 I have a DreamSpark key (the educational equivalent of technet) loaded on my custom tower at home & it let me upgrade without an issue so I doubt you will have any issue
Circaflex
It works fine, I upgraded two of my desktops that have been using technet keys.
Marshalus Veteran Posted July 31, 2015 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2015 Legally, I don't think it's supposed to work, but it's been working for most people.
