Lumia Numbering

It was/is generally simple to follow until Nokia muddied the waters with 530/535/630.

  • The first digit on the right is a minor revision - 920
  • the second digit from right is a major revision - 920
  • one or two digits on from the left is a series where higher number denotes better/larger hardware - 920
  • XL postfix denotes larger screen of the same model with better specs

So you have following series 4xx, 5xx, 6xx, 7xx, 8xx, 9xx, 10xx, 13xx, 15xx (10,13 and 15 have only had one model ever released to form any real pattern)

MS need to get rid of this naming convention, which they've made worse with XL phones if they plan on keeping the Lumia range of coarse...

If you look at the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus they're the same phone with the later having a larger screen (in turn the additional space allows a larger battery), however the 950 and XL have different CPU's, the build (casing) is different, the lens assembly differs. They have themselves pooched the naming convention. Even if you overlook most models skipped forth gen what they should have done is:

Base model: 950

Dual sim: 952

Larger screen: 954

Dual sim: 956

I think we've seen the end of the Lumias, but agree the naming started to get a little confusing towards the end.

It only made sense if your looking at the "current" model range.

Once you start trying to look at the older models mixed with new models... the numbers are really confusing.
