Microsoft tracking you?

Recommended Posts

You can copy MS software as much as you like. All you have to have, is a legal license for each copy you make.

This license is paperbased and doesn't have any link to your identity. So MS will never know if your copy of XP is licensed or not.

If MS was to block the use of XP then the owner of the original copy will be mighty upset (law suit anyone)

So no tracking no SP1 barring will ever exist. Just chill out.

I have this info on good grounds... I will say no more ;)

Microsoft DOES track you...

At least they do in Windows ME and therefore probably in XP

When I reinstalled ME on my computer on the first boot I saw a Dos prompt windows pop up with Tracer.exe and the word Redmond in the title bar..... I don't care if you wanna flame me, I am not making this up

They probbaly dont watch what ur doing but they know when you log on to Windows and where you are, your serial number and stuuf like that, its safe to assume so anyway

exactly what if they are tracking the people but they dont do nothing because its illegal and the people can sue them...

and they are just waiting for the law to change on piracy or something so they can bust some asses

they probably know exactly how many ppl have pirates copies and how many ppl have legal copies... but you are right, there is nothing they can do about it... they wouldnt be able to legally prove it with the tracer rpgram cause it illegal, plus they would lose more money bringing individuals to court, it owuldnt be worth it.

o well.

shall i get drunk tonight?

Nope, no sarcasm. I was just wondering though. We all know it would be easy enough for for MS to pin copies of illegal XPs to people but they wont be able to do anything, couldn't they just hand over a list to the authorities?

thats exactly what i am saying man they could give the lists to the attorneys and maybe the anti piracy laws change (you never know it could happen)and then they CAN do something about piracy

christ this is such bs. NO THEY DO NOT. If people are so freaking paranoid, install something like tiny personal firewall, it will tell you EVERY program that tries to connect to the internet. And I can tell you right now, the only ones that do are either built in sort of things (like 'ping'), Windows Media Player (codec updates), Internet Explorer (surprise surprise, explorer updates), and Windows Update (which can be disabled). Other programs like messanger are optional.

It is TOTALLY illegal for them to track you, by any means. The only "tracking" done is by the CD Key crap. And the only time they start 'investigating' is people start calling/electronically activating the same key OVER AND OVER (I mean like 100+ times).

Christ you kids are even more paranoid than me! And I bolt my house up like fort knox in the middle of the afternoon.....

I think 4-5 people in this thread have already pointed out how and why Microsoft isnt tracking you. I havent seen a single shred of evidence suggesting otherwise. Its just "I heard from this guy who knows this guy that MS might be tracking you." Oh thats a reliable source! **** this I am going back to dos!

If you are really that worried why dont you bite the bullet and drop $99 on a copy of WinXP Home? I admit it, I actually bought it! I wish MS was tracking all you dumba**'s!

Sorry I didnt mean to get so angry. Have some smilies!!!! :) :p  ;) :D :rambo: :knocked: :ditsy:

Hugs and kisses,

Kibler

I've heard VERY similar conversations from paranoid pot smokers. You go and do something illegal, then have "armchair lawyer" heated debates about the legality of the consequenses. Too funny. How dare those *******s at Microsoft try to enforce the rules? Who do they think they are anyway?

Kids, the people who make the things you enjoy deserve to get paid. And Don't give me that "they have enough money" BS. If THEY thought that way, we'd all still be using win3x and listening to Beethoven on an AM radio.

Think about it.

And when you're done thinking about it, ask your boss for a couple extra shifts and BUY XP (pick up a couple Metallica CDs while you're out ) :devious:

Who cares if m$ is tracking warezed versions of Windows XP.. you guys all bought *your* copies, or are covered under some other licensing scheme right? :) ;) :)

Even though m$ aren't tracking us, I wouldn't really be too bothered if they did.. at the end of the day, if you are a legit paying customer then you have nothing to hide. If however you dont pay, then you have everything to hide.

BTW : this isnt supposed to be a 'I buy my software, and you dont' type rant - though my copy of XP is legal, there are plenty of other apps that I own that are not.. I am as guilty as the next man, but I am just saying that if you are a legitmate customer then you have nothing to hide - if you pirate, then accept the consequences.

For some reason everytime I run windows update about a few days later I would get Denial of Service Attacks up the ying yang. I would then start viewing my logs of who accessed my computer via Earthlink High Speed Cable from TWC support staff. They send this stuff out to me via email or by snail mail about every 1 to 2 weeks. I looked at my logs and I found nothing unusual regarding who has accessed my computer. I do not run an ftp server or anything like that. Then next thing I did was delete my cookies one by one to see if there might be anything implanted in my cookies. My DOS attacts would happen about every 5 to 10 seconds via pop-up windows...I not sure exactly what they call it so I'm just guessing that it's a pop-up windows since that's what it looks like so don't flame me on this because I'm saying right now I might be wrong cauz I don't know one way or the other. So I deleted all of my cookies one by one still no effect. So on to my Temp Internet Files. The first file I deleted stopped all the attacks and quess what file that was. Here goes nothing.

Temp file name: iuident

Location: windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab

Type of File: Cabinent File

The one thing I noticed after going to windows update again and waiting a few days until the DOS attacks starting happening again is that every time a DOS attack happened I would check the Temp internet file and it would say on the Last modified date the same exact time the DOS attacks happened. It would keep on updating with every DOS attack. Here's the funny thing. My copy of windows xp is from an MSDN subscription in which I do have and pay for but here's whats funny. When they mailed out the windows xp copys in Octobers shipment for some reason I never received my copies nor my whole october shipment. So in November I called MSDN and told them I never got the October shipment so they said they would resend the shipment out. I asked them incase the original shipment was stolen if they could deactivate the product keys off of my subscription and they said they could and that they would send me out brand new product keys with the windows xp shipment reorder and they said yes they could. So I received the shipment via 2nd day air UPS and went right away and installed windows xp home and the product key worked to install the OS but then upon the activation part I went to activate my copy of windows xp home with my new product keys and for the next 10 days I would constantly try to activate my copy and it would say it could not activate. So I said the heck with this I just used a crack on the web to trick the os into thinking it has been already activated. I thought MSDN might of deactivated the new product key too so they would not count against my 10 activation limit even though I wanted these products too work and the original products to not count...go figure. So I'm getting all of these DOS attacks from what it all looks like from the stupid file that's put into my Temp internet files every time I login to windows update because I'm thinking It may be scanning the copy of windows to see if it's a legal copy at the same time it scans my computer for what software and hardware I have to produce the correct updates...Scary. Where in reality my copies of windows are legal via MSDN but I'm just sick and tired of dealing with MSDN to try to get product keys that work. But just think about this. The only Microsoft website that they have that scans our computer in any way that we know off is Windows Update. Let me think if windows update can scan our computer for what hardware and software we have what would stop them from scanning all of the files on our computer such as the files for the activation cracks for files from edonkey or kazaa or whatever they want. Windows update is the one site in which most of us overlook the possibility of what Microsoft could really do. If they can scan all of our software and hardware for update why couldn't they scan the whole computer for anythings...you see where I'm going with this. Trust me Microsoft know about all of the activation cracks out there it just boils down to what they can do about it. If they know what those cracks are they can scan our computer for those files via windows update and send that information back to them at the same time your computer is sending the information about you hardware and software back to them so they can generate the correct and proper updates for your computer. Here's the funny thing. When I would go to windows update and it would scan all of my file for updates I'm thinking that it sends back information regarding crack programs and it takes Microsoft about two days to do something about that once they receive the information since my DOS attacks start happening after about two days after the initial windows update login. Just think about that for a few day and tell me what you think regarding this possibility.

Thanks for any input at all. Sorry this was so long but I just figured I'd say everything at once so I wouldn't have to post more replys to explain in more detail for anybody that asks.
