Skateboarding

Recommended Posts

Im thinking about taking up skateboarding. I feel like i'm at a point in my life where all I do is go to work and come home. I need something adventurous to do. I'll be 35 by the time I get a skateboard and I have literally no expectations. Just  want to get out there and learn to skate. I might be having like a 30 something crisis lol but I'd love to try it.

I skated up to a competitive level from the age of 12 till about 8 years ago. Then i continued to skate but more part time. About 4 years ago I developed severe gouty arthritis in my lead foot big toe which made it extremely painful to even attempt to skate.

Lately I've started a new med for the gout which seems to be working and I've been eye-balling my board with the idea of perhaps building a ramp in the garden.

The thing with skateboarding is there's so many different styles you can get in to that you can usually find a niche you enjoy and a friendly group of people to join in and socialise with no matter what your skill level. Or even just go all lone wolf and skate on your own. It's also relatively cheap compared to most hobbies.

I say go for it man. I built and ran a skatepark in the early part of the 2000's and our users age ranges went from 4 to 70 (yup!), I'm fast heading to 40 and i'd still have an awesome time on a board.

Yeah I just want to get out there and learn and have fun. Been watching a ton of skateboarding videos on youtube and its got me inspired to give it a try. Not looking to go out and start kick flipping off the bat, just wanna get the basics of riding down first. The more time I can take getting the basics down the better I will be in the long run I think.  I think when income tax season comes around im gonna build me a good board. Don't want to start off on some crappy walmart board.

That's what it boils down too, alone or in a group, you can go out, have fun, get some exercise and be as creative as you want.

Go for it, skateboarding is a lot of fun. I started when I was 10 (nearly 30 now) for the first 10 years I skated street and got good enough to earn a few sponsorships. As I got older falls started hurting more and taking longer to recover from (although this might have been due to past falls :p) so I switched to vert skateboarding and still have a lot of fun to this day, falling on smooth plywood with knee/elbowpads usually hurts a lot less than concrete. At my local skatepark there are plenty of people aged 35+, good luck, have fun!

Yup... I have seen 30 to 50 years old guys all over place.. I mean they are on skateboards, BMX bikes, etc..

I went to a bar a few weeks ago and my friend and i watched the BMX event on TV...  When they mentioned the BMX rider's age which is 49...  My friend was like "what?  That;s for real?"  I told him that they are everywhere in that age range 30 to 50.

He didn't know... which he thought BMX riders would be up to 25 years old.
