how do you change the default folder view in xp?

Recommended Posts

ok, heres the story.. xp defaults folders to tile view.. i hate tile view. but, if i do apply to all folders for detail view, then the other few folders i DONT want in detail view keep reverting to it.. like control panel. no matter how many times i set control panel to icon view, it just doesnt stick. so im avoiding the apply to all folders button like the plague. so please dont suggest it.

now, it occurs to me that the difference between tile and detail view is probably as simple as one digit in a setting somewhere.. so does anyone know where that setting is, so i can make xp show folders which dont have a different setting in detail view? right now control panel happily stays in icon view, but i have to manually change folders to detail view, and that doesnt work at all for some things (like cds) ..

so how do i change it to default to detail view instead of tile?

first just set the desired view for all of the folders

then, under folder settings, in the view tab there must be an option which says "save view options for every folder" (or something like that...i'm using a german version so i have to translate first, so i'm not sure the translation is really the one you have..but it must be that way). after you did thtat you just have to set the preffered view options for the folders you want. the other folders will stay at the default view you set, and the "customized" ones will keep the view you chose:D

this doesnt quite work.. 'remember each folders view settings' is on, but it doesnt remember cdrom drives for example.. they default to tile view even if i just switch folders and back.. plus i have hundreds of directories and i dont feel like changing them all by hand .. so i just want to change the setting that tells it to start at tile view..

In the tools menu of your folder go to folder options under the view tab their is an option to tick - Remember each folders view settings - is yours ticked, if not tick it.

Mines ticked and I can have different view for every folder on my drive.

Hope this helps.

:D Large :D

as i said its already on :p and it doesnt remember cdrom drives.

really ALL i want to do is change the default view setting from tile to detail. as far as i know NO OPTION for this exists anywhere in any of the configuration dialogs so i must conclude that its a registry option. does ANYONE know where it is and what i should change it to.

no .. heres what usually happens after i reformat. i set a folder to detail view, and all. i do apply to all folders. i go to control panel and set it to icon view. it stays as icon view. for a while.

a reboot later, maybe even a few hours later with no reboot, and its detail view. i change it to icon view again. it sticks for a bit.

this goes on for weeks. now out of habit every time i go into control panel i find myself right clicking to change it to icon view.

this time, i didnt do apply to all folders. so far its worked, itsstill icon view. but things go to detail view and i hate it.

simply all i want is to be told where the setting is for tile/detail so i can change it so as far as windows is concerned the default folder display is detail view, not tile, icon, list, or whatever else.

    • If nobody was using it. Then why specifically is it a shame? Windows needs be slimmer. Every feature like this is just more bloat
    • Invincible VS announced, a brutal 3v3 tag fighting game by former Killer Instinct developers by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The Xbox Games Showcase showed off a brand-new fighting game incoming from the award-winning Invincible universe. Simply dubbed Invincible VS, the title will feature three versus three tag fighting with all sorts of heroes and villains from the franchise. Check out the announcement trailer above, which shows off some gameplay near the tail end of it. Published by Skybound Games and developed by Quarter Up, Invincible VS has a big focus on the brutality, much like its source material. There will be iconic arenas straight from the show, as well as a battle damage system to show off the carnage on the fighters themselves. "In Invincible VS, every move, every line of dialogue, every broken limb and bloodied mouth carries real cost and consequence—all building toward the bone-deep satisfaction of victory," said Invincible VS executive producer Mike Willette. "No tag fighting game has ever delivered this level of intensity and violence. This game is a love letter to the fighting game community, created by a team of passionate, experienced fans of the genre." While this is a brand-new studio that's taking on the project, it has been revealed that former members from the 2013 Killer Instinct are involved in the development. "I have said this before, and I’ll say it again: this is the most excited I’ve been about anything involving Invincible," said Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman. "Invincible VS is crazy fun, fast, ferocious and dripping with the same over-the-top brutality that you’ll see in the comic book pages and on the show. It is a natural evolution of the franchise and it is everything that fans have been demanding for over a decade! This is without a doubt, probably the best superhero fighting game in the universe!" The title will have multiple game modes as well, including a campaign with an original story by the writer of the animated series, an arcade mode for skirmishes, and a training arena. As expected, competitive and casual online multiplayer will be available too. Invincible VS is coming out sometime in 2026 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
    • And how would a "real" handheld Xbox differed from that? Pray tell. Surely it too would've been a PC with a built in screen and controller, shoehorned into a handheld form factor, and running a flavour of optimised windows? You know Xbox Series X is just a PC running a heavily customised version of Windows 10, right?
    • Let me guess, just big hyped cut scenes for what is really just more run around in the same old static urban zone machine gun vs. sniper game play.
    • I am not seeing a huge difference there.
