Neowin Toolbar?

Question

Hi,

I have created a basic toolbar for Neowin for a friend of mine however I am trying to find a way of passing a search string to vB and then initiating a search of all the forums.

But so far I have been unlucky with this and may end up removing this feature.

However if anyone would like to make suggestions of things to include i will look into them and will post a screen shot if required :D.

Cheers.

I know the Neowin toolbar was once created before. Someone made this before and I downloaded it before too. At first effort, the Neowin toolbar was pretty good enough. Well at least maybe later someone would put this up again.

here's something I posted over here

neobar.png

View New Posts: http://neowin.net/bboard/search.php?s=&action=getnew

UserCP: http://neowin.net/bboard/usercp.php?s=

Search: http://neowin.net/bboard/search.php?s=

NewThread: java script:location.href="http://neowin.net/bboard/newthread.php?s=&action=newthread&forumid=" + document.URL.substr(53,2);

Post A Reply: java script:location.href="http://neowin.net/bboard/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&threadid=" + document.URL.substr(52,7);

just pop those in as links on the links toolbar in IE and you're all set. The search bar is the only thing that I've found impossible to implement... :D Enjoy!

As always this is beta software at the moment and is likly to have a bug or two in it so watch out for them ;)

Oh and the look has changed a bit :)

Setup link: neowin.exe

Cheers.

To display the toolbar after it has been installed do the following:

In View > Toolbars select "Neowin.Net".

This will place a new toolbar into the Internet Explorer window called Neowin.Net

If you are running IE6 or WindowsXP you must first unlock the toolbars.

Then grap the Neowin caption and drag up or down to move to a different row.

Cheers.

What? No link to the NeoWin.net home page? I wany my news. :)

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. On the search... upon examining the message board search form, I see the form is being submitted using the POST method. The search query value is sent in a field named "query".

You should be able to submit the query value using the POST method in your toolbar application. What language are you programming in? If I can find any examples of how to send a post command to a web page from an application I will let you know.

If the search page accepted the GET method instead, this would be as appending a search value to https://www.neowin.net/bboard/search.php?query=

BTW... if you do add this search feature. Could you add a drop down to allow us to select between directing the search between the Board and searching "all of NeoWin" (https://www.neowin.net/search.php). BTW... the field on that form is named "searchfor".

It looks and works nice BTW. :)

No probs I'll jam a link in for the news page :D .

Doing the search bits shouldn't be to much of a problem when I find out how to submit the query to the website and the code to switch between has been setup since I started this thing :)

Oh and the toolbar has been programed in Delphi6

Cheerio

One more idea... ok a couple of more. ;)

Is there any way you could add an option for us to remove the text tables? You could use hint text pop-ups to tell us what each button is.

Also, if there is any way to remove the Neowin.Net title, that would free up a little more room as well.

(Although this is might be a bit of an overkill. ;) It would be really cool if there was a way we could customize which buttons to display on our bar. Just like the "customize" function built-in to IE's default tool bar.

Just some friendly ideas. :D You've done some good work.

Anormal: To unlock the toolbars in IE6 or WindowsXP what you do is right click on any of the toolbars and choose the "Lock Toolbars" menu item.

timdorr: Thanks for moving it (I didn't want the thread to go this way as I had another thead in programming about the search function of the site :))

Cheers

not to be competitive, but i'd like to develop such a toolbar (maybe not a neowin one, but a general vB one...) where'd you get the info on making them, becuase i've lost the links by now...

perhaps you'd like to colaberate (but you may get frustrated with my programming speed becuase none of my languages beyond java or php are really up to snuff...)

For those of you who are interested... here is a link to the Search code thread.

I apologize Vader, I was unaware of the parallel thread.
