Howto: Resize or stretch...?

Question

Currently I have a pic that I want to set as my wallpaper. The resolution is 765x1041. From that we know the pic is vertical and will have to be "centered" when setting as the wallpaper. But I don't want that because the side will look ugly.

I want the orginal pic and don't want to add design and stuff to it... So... what I am wondering is, is it possible to use Photoshop or similar app to stretch just the side of the pic? So whatever is in the center remain the same aspect ratio.

Would be really helpful if someone could help me thru this. Thanks in advance.

A thought on how to do this:

1) Copy the section that you want to stretch to a different image.

2) Stretch that image by itself.

3) Copy that section back to the original.

This is just an idea. Without seeing the image its kind of hard to see what you mean. Post the pic and maybe I can work on it.
