You can increase the size of the desktop icon above 72 but it will increase the size of other icons aswell. See picture below. If you want to change it go into regedit, the search the HKEY_USERS key for "Shell Icon Size". When you find it just change it's value to the size you want. Here's where the value on my machine was located.

HKEY_USERSS-1-5-21-1177238915-839522115-854245398-1003Control PanelDesktopWindowMetrics

You will need to change the icon spacing for icons this big otherwise there won't be enough space between the icons and the'll overlap each other.
