I don't mean to crash the post but I do have a similar question.

I was looking for something that would let me get files from my PC at home, by using a PC at University (incase I forget a paper or something). It seems all these apps need to be installed on both comptuers which I couldn't do at University. Is there a work around that would let me do that?

RDP normally does not have to be installed.. the client is part of of windows xp. VNC options provide for the JAVA http server.. IE not client need be installed - just a browser.

As to just accessing file - setup a ftp server on your home pc.. again nothing should have to be installed on the client machine.

You won't be able to use Remote Desktop from work to access your home computer, only from home to access your work computer. XP Home has the viewer, but not the server part. Also, keep in mind that you will have to be able to open and forward any ports that the software needs to use.
