what would u like to see improved on mac os?

what would u like to see improved on the macintosh operating system (note: NO flaming)? such as ui changes, better memory usage, faster, etc?

i would like to see the dock be easier to operate, such as when your running an app such as ichat or ie where your using multiple windows, waiting for the menu to pop up gets annoying (atleast for me), and sometimes instead of the menu opening, i accidently dragged the icon and it moves on the dock, it would be handy to see when, if you already have the application open, theres an option (or the function built in) where when you click on the icon on the dock, a menu pops up and when you double click on the icon, a window pops up (if theres a window already open, that window opens, but if there arent any windows open but the app is open, it creates a new window (like on ie))

i would also like to see better classic integration as of jan 1st (probably in the 10.2.3 update) on osx since theres an app i use most of the time im on the computer that doesnt run on osx, so i have to use classic to run it, if classic was faster within osx, i would be happy

what would u like to see?

I would like to see a better instillation/uninstillation system. I don't like the idea that you simply drag the folder into the trash bin and poof, it's completely gone from your system. I just don't trust it. Most programs install something somewhere else

I suggest reading up on what you're bitching about. If the developer fallows the guidlines, everything is kept into that tight little package that you're draging around. Right click and vew contents...everything is in there.

I'm gonna have to echo Jeese's post.

If the developer of the program has made the program correctly, there will be nothing (except maybe a preference file) scattered around your hard drive.

This is a problem with many Windows users who come to the mac, they just can't believe that all you have to do is throw the program in the trash and hit Empty trash (or rm -R ProgramFolder/ from the terminal) and the program (and just about everything associated with that program) is gone.

I assure you that about 99.0% of the time, that is all you have to do. There is no such thing as a registry. There are no DLL's. So there is nothing to clutter up the system.

Having said that, I'm not sure what I would like to see added to OS X. To be honest, I extremely happy with the current OS and I haven't found any glaring problems.

The only problem that I ever have is iTunes cutting off when my display goes to sleep, and iTunes gets really bogged down once you get a library above 30 gigs (or for me it does). So I guess I would like iTunes to be updated. :D

This is the biggest feature i like most about OSX. So simple. It seems like there is more to it, but very rarely is that the case. Just drag and drop into the garbage. Ingenious.

I'd like to see better Samba support. I cannot seem to access my shares on my XP machine from my eMac. :(

Oh bro you've definetely got something set wrong. Jaguar networks with Windows boxes better than Windows itself. Absolutely effortless. Infact, Windows will identify the Jag box as an XP box because Jag "tells" the XP box that it's XP too...and they share happily ever after :D

Go over your settings and I'm sure you'll have them communicating nicely.

The one thing that SHOULD be improved on is the Finder. They need to rewrite it in Cocoa, instead of having it like they do now - some kind of Carbon/Cocoa hybrid thing. It needs to be speeded up quite a bit, and have a function for removing files directly, instead of having to move them to the trash first.

And yes, I know about SNAX (can't rember what it's called nowadays though), but it feels unfinnished, plus it costs money.

i believe that the installation/uninstallation should be better as others have said, but there may be a time when the uninstaller is corrupt for the app, so it wont uninstall the app, so moving the app to the trash as uninstalling is alot easier, the thing i dont like about installing appz on osx is how when a disc image is made on osx, i have to open the disc image of the app (usually in sit format), then it unzips the format to .dmg, and creates a icon on the desktop and the dmg file gets opened by the disc image app and creates a new icon on the desktop, but this time the icon that has the app/app folder icon in it which you have to drag into the apps folder, and ends up giving me a cluttered desktop....gets a lil annoying

SNAX is now Path Finder :)

The BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG thing I want to see improved (and is apprently a focus in 10.3), is window redraw/resize performance. It's horribly slow, so resizing something like iTunes or iCal is murderously slow. They just need to offload yet more things to the GPU, that's all :)

I'd like to see Mac OS X on my P4 :(

You know, the Mac OS was already ported to the x86 chipset once, back in the Middle 90's. It didn't do to well so it was scrapped.

I seriously doubt that OS X will ever be ported to the x86 chipset.

Sorry to break the news to ya, but don't get your hopes up.

:D

After about a week, the things I'd like to see improved with MacOS...

1.) Window Redraws

The OS looks wonderful, but as has been stated the redraw on resize is a true joke! Offload that processing to the Graphics Processor and I think we'd see a perfomance jump...

2.) File Names

Just ran into an error, "File Name is over 33 Characters". Um, how about we take a page from the Windows Playbook, 128 Character Filenames or perhaps even 256...

Other than those two, I'd say only some optimising on the network kernal (Seems a touch sluggish at times) and we'd have an even better OS...

When you get Jag, Quartz will take care of the screen redraw problem (or it should)

What problems are you having with long file names?

I've never run into a file name length problem.

Check out the size of that folder's name and the file that is in it.

:)

Ya I'm confused with the file name thing too. Here's a file I just created.

This_File_Name_is_So_God_Damn_Long_it_is_Completely_Useless__Why_The_Hell_Would_Anyone_Even_Want_A_File_Name_This_Long__.rtf

Looks like plenty of characters to me :s

Odd...I'm running OSX 10.1.5...

I just created...

This_File_Is_A_Really_Really_Really_Long_File_Name

and it said...

"The file name specified is too long, please try again."

But it would take...

This_File_Is_A_Really_Really_Rea

Any ideas?

That is really odd. After reading through the apple documentation, it says that OS X supports file names upto 255 characters...

Very strange indeed...

Status : In Transit  ?

Sched. Delivery : Dec 18, 2002

Two days til Jaguar, I won't worry about this since I plan to wipe the drive and start from scratch.;))

It is odd, I've been trying all the different programs I've got, from Office X to TextEdit and all of them kick back that error.:pp No idea...

Oh well...

Well a lower price tag for one thing and a lower price tag for anohter thing and again a cheaper price. Other than that, I would like it to perform as well as a PC, and have the cool programs of a PC, and well look like a PC type computer.

But I may be alone on this one. :D
