pagal
hey... I having some problems with mplayer. First it wouldn't detect a video output, but that I fixed by using mplayer -vo x11, then the sound, but I fixed that too. The only problem I still have is the quality of the movies and the screen size. For example, I played a divx file and the quality was a bit less than in xp and then when I change the screen size, it just maximizes the screen but the size of the video stays the same (its not like that with xine). any ideas? could anyone maybe post an installtion procedure I could follow? mezz
Try to use xv instead x11 for the screen size issue, you will need to have xv installed.. The quailty, I really can't tell. Check my very old screenshot.. -> http://www.mezzweb.com:81/images/fbsd_shot.jpg As you see, the quaility is perfect and it's DivX. Did you compile MPlayer? Or, are you using RPM? If it's compile, then I can show you what I did with compile. I need to download MPlayer and check the options again.
pagal
how do I install xv? and I used the rpm for mplayer, since I thought it'd easier to remove if I didn't like it. However, if you can tell me what options to use, I'll compile it myself. for xv, someone told me to " Load="xv" " in XF86Config, but that didn't do anything. mezz
Heh, xv has nothing to do with XFree86.. xv's website -> http://www.trilon.com/xv/ .. If you want to compile it by yourself, then there are many patches that you will need to patch them and compile it. The patches are in the same link above. FreeBSD's ports do the job for me. Maybe, you can try to find rpm of xv if you rather to use rpm. To compile MPlayer, I use the options following: -O3 -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer (for CFLAGS) --enable-gui --disable-freetype That's all. Near whole options in the MPlayer's compile will do the autodetect on what your system has already installed and etc. GUI is disable by default and freetype is enable by default. I had to disable freetype, because it makes my MPlayer crawl slower than honey runs down the hill. BTW: If your system has very good OpenGL support, then you can try to use it instead to see if it helps. Check in mplayer -vo help..
pagal
hey mezz, I followed you instructions and compiled mplayer, but the "-O3" didn't work but the quality is much better. I also tried the rpm for xv, but that still didn't work so I gave up on it. The only problem I still have is the "Double Size/Full Screen" option. Even when I try to double/maximize the screen, the size of the window still stays the same. Any ideas?
trpn
if you have xv installed then open mplayer (with the gui) right click on it and go to preferences, then go to the video tab and change it from x11 to xv.... if this doesn't work then your xv installation didn't work .... what distro are you using? pagal
I have tried that already and it still gives the same error ("no video_output"; and I'm using RedHat 8.1 beta

Yes, use xv instead x11.. x11 doesn't work on double/full screen on me neither, which I had to use xv to get double/full screen works.
pagal
man...I've struggled with xv a lot, but its not working for me. Xine, however works perfectly with full screen etc, but I'm starting to like mplayer more.
mezz
Well, all you are telling us that you are having the problem with XV. Yeah, what's your problem? Care to post your details, eh? ;) Anyway, at midnight or so, I will try to get on family computer and boot into RedHat 8 (not 8.1 beta) and check stuff. If I am able to get stuff work and I will post the result in here.
pagal
thanks mezz the only problem is that it doesn't work, lol. I mean, it installs fine but when I try to use it with mplayer it doesn't work and I get the same video_output error.
mezz
Oh, you mean when you try to do the fullscreen and you get this video_output error? It can be depend on the video card, so what's video card?
pagal
no, I get the error even if I try to use xv (even normal size). The vid card is an ATI Rage 128 Pro, 32 Mb.
mezz
BTW: Did you install XV first, before you compiled MPlayer? If you didn't, then you will need to recompile MPlayer. Also, be sure to check XV if it works by run xv in the command. Can you copy-n-paste the xvinfo in here?
pagal
hey mezz, I just got xv to work by itself. When I just type xv, it opens the xv window but mplayer -vo xv file still doesn't work. And, I compiled mplayer with --enable-xv options as well.

mezz
The issue is your video card.. Copy-n-paste your xvinfo in here.. Also, check -> http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/video.html#xv_ati and http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/video.html#xv BTW: There have many -vo options that you can use beside xv to help your fullscreen.. Check in 2.3 -> http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/ .. I think, Xine uses SDL or SVGAlib by default, but I am not sure.
pagal
thanks mezz. I think I have figured out the problem though. Its my poop video card, and the outputs that mplayer uses are just too good for it. I was able to get full screen when I used opengl (-vo gl) but it was too slow. I guess I'll use it the way it is untill I get a new vid. card. Just out of curiosity, how would I get rid of a program that I didn't install using rpm? trpn
do a "make uninstall" in the same directory that you did "make install" in ... although it won't work for every program...
mezz
Just out of curiosity, how would I get rid of a program that I didn't install using rpm? Same as what trpn said, it's really depend on what the programmers provide the nice features. Like, not every app has the uninstall option or lack function of uninstall on Windows. If there has no make uninstall option, then use rm command to delete them by manual.
pagal
btw, the output for xvinfo is X-Video Extension version 2.2 screen #0 no adaptors present. there...
MulletRobZ
I got the MPlayer plugin working in regular user mode, but I can only run the actual program as root. Xine is much better for DivX support, especially for lower systems like mine.
