restoring XP's default uxtheme.dll

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Is there any way I can restore XP's default uxtheme.dll file?

I am assuming I can just copy the file from any other system that has it?

If you have an XP installation CD, you can insert it and issue the following command in a command prompt:

32-bit OS:

expand x:\i386\UXTHEME.DL_ c:\Windows\system32\uxtheme.dll

64-bit OS:

expand x:\AMD64\UXTHEME.DL_ c:\Windows\system32\uxtheme.dll

Where X is the drive letter.

Otherwise, you can copy the DLL from someone else's computer provided they use the same service pack as you.

Edit: xp support topic, isn't it?

Edit 2: XP RTM/SP1 CD will not work if you have SP2

My CD is SP2.

I have the latest build of XP SP2 (as in all the latest critical updates).

Meaning it will work, correct?

how did you replace it? if you used a patcher, you should be able to restore it. if you used replacer, you can restore the backup file that was created during replacement.

but why do you need to restore the default file?
