SAN JOSE, Calif. - What was billed as the biggest fight in female MMA history didn't disappoint.

Ultimately, though, hard-hitting Brazilian Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos proved too powerful for the previously unbeaten Gina Carano and delivered the face of women's MMA a first-round beating to win Strikeforce's first-ever 145-pound title.

The headliner, which was a milestone event for the sport and especially women's MMA, took place in front of 13,524 spectators at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and aired on Showtime.

The match-up between North America's two most notable female fighters had been teased for more than a year by the now-defunct EliteXC promotion. It'd take nearly a year for Strikeforce to sign both fighters and set up the match-up that many believed would usher women's MMA into the mainstream.

With a live Showtime audience and unparalleled media attention, Santos took control in the striking department early in the fight. Carano hung tough for the first few minutes of the scheduled five-rounder and landed more than a couple solid shots. She also masterfully escaped from ankle-lock and keylock submission attempts but couldn't maintain the few times she garnered dominant ground positions.

Carano, though, turned up the power late in the round.

After Carano landed on her back, Santos stood over her opponent and rained down a series of blows. While initially covering up, Carano's defenses weakened as the timekeeper signaled the 10-second warning. With the seconds ticking by, referee Josh Rosenthal warned Carano to fight back as she absorbed a steady stream of punches. But a split second before the round ended, he waved off the fight and awarded Santos the TKO victory.

The official stoppage came at 4:59 of that opening frame.

While there was some initial confusion over whether or not Carano had been saved by the bell, the end was evident when her corner man, UFC legend Randy Couture, entered the cage to tend to the fighter.

Santos (8-1), who's now won eight straight fights since a submission loss in her pro debut, credited the win to the intense training camps she's had since that first and only defeat.

"The key for tonight was five years of training," said Santos, who continually thanked the fans, Strikeforce and Showtime for the opportunity.

Carano, meanwhile, falls to 7-1 and snaps a seven-fight winning streak.

Luckily for the Xtreme Couture fighter, though, she kept the bout close enough and could conceivably earn an immediate title shot with Santos, the first female champion in a major U.S. organization.

Mousasi destroyed Babulu, Fabricio Werdum was getting owned by Mike Kyle for a second I thought he might lose, luckily Werdum made Kyle tap, and Carano vs Cyborg was entertaining but it was incredibly amateurish for a main event, the odd thing is the ref stopped the fight after the bell went and not at 4:59

    • Cheap labour, the same as the U.K. China pays their people pittance.
    • Those people that come over here on boats are already in a safe country, if they want to come over here then do so correctly though the right channels. I was born in the U.K, my family that came over here came so via the proper means. My partner came here via the correct channels, she also became a British citizen, she knows more about this country than most of them that was born here, including myself, she worked hard to do what she does. She will stick up for this country and have done a few times, when people from her own part of world have put the U.K down. We are not going to agree, all I said to start with is that maybe Trump has the right idea with this America first thing and maybe we should start doing the same. Maybe not as drastic as what he is doing, but we do need to sort this country out, we need to sort out tech instead of relying on the U.S and others. Again you have not shown why you are so annoyed that we have left the E.U and this is what it is all about? If you don't live in the U.K and live in the E.U are you annoyed that we left your little club? If you live in the U.K and is pro-E.U, then fair enough then I can see how it annoys you. Are you one of these people who lives in the U.K and have a holiday chalet in the E.U and can now only stay there for so long? If so, then that is bad luck. As I have posted before, I have no problem with people coming here to work, as long as they do if via the proper channels. We are out of the E.U, people voted out, and maybe if more people had voted instead of sitting on their backsides the results would have been different. But they like the E.U and our government thought no we would not vote to leave. How wrong they were, surprised me. I expected to wake up in the morning and hear on the radio that we voted to stay. As I said, we are out and have been for 10 years, we are not going to go back in anytime soon if we ever do, so we all need to make the best of how things are. Anyway, this is supposed to be a tech site.
    • Tim Cook: "The US over time began to stop having as many vocational kinds of skills." What's the point of wasting time getting those skills if you can't get a job with them? Good Lord, maybe he and his cohort of CEO's who exported all these jobs to China should just shut the f**k up :D
