Installers not starting from outside OS drive

Recommended Posts

I have some installers that worked fine in XP but don't install when run from outside the OS partition.

(outside the OS partition - other partitions on a different HDD)

All 4 I tried should be NSIS-type installers(but it does not apply to all NSIS installers, the Imgburn one runs fine outside OS partition):

mkx.y.9.exe - Haali Media Splitter

SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.4.0.exe

wa5_coloreditor_2_2_0.exe - Wianmp Color Editor

WaSDP_1.11.exe - Winamp Skin Dev Pack

From the event log, it seems to be some ntdll.dll fault.

But they install if I move the problem installers to the OS partition.

I would like to know why they can't run from there in Windows 7 but are able to run from there in XP.

By the way, I'm on Windows 7 Pro x64.

Thanks.

never heard of that one, DVD decrypter installer works fine for me on windows 7x64. It runs off my external drive and has no issue. I also just tested it from my backup partition and it installed fine also.

Check to see if you have OS corruption.

cmd>run as admin

sfc /purgecache

sfc /scannow

Hmm, it happened on 2 of my Win7 clean installs so I don't think it is OS corruption.

Weird I just tested running the installers off my USB thumbdrive and it works (external but USB).

Strange I still can't get them to run off from a different partition on another internal SATA HDD.

@Soldiers33

I waited for a while and Windows gave the popup saying that theres an error on running the installer.

So it did try to run but can't I suppose.

Hmm, I played around more.

Seem to have narrowed down on something.

The said installers only don't work in that one folder.

I copied the installers to the root of that HDD and it runs.

Copied them to another folder in the same HDD and it runs too.

Strange.
