Hey,

I have a GTX 295 graphics card, and after reading about the latest troubles with drivers i rolled back my drivers. last night while i was just surfing and listening to music, my windows 7 changed to the basic theme.

I quickly loaded up GPU-Z and found that my GPU temperature was just over 90, and i didnt like the sound of that so i just shut the computer down and went to bed :D

So ive just got up, start the computer and its idle temp is just under 70. so i went and downloaded the latest drivers from the nvidia website (196.21) and ive installed them.

GPU-Z is still showing a temp of just under 70, is this a high temp? coz it sounds like it to me :(

I've included a screen shot of GPU-Z just incase im looking at the wrong temp :D

should i be worried? does anyone know the normal temps for a GTX 295?

I need to put my heart at ease, as i paid a fair bit for the card, and dont really want it to die :D

Thanks in advance

What GTX 295 cooler do you have the new or old?

On one of the GTX 295 GPU's I'm getting 61C the other 56C at idle and I have seen it go over 90C at load nothing I can really do about that mainly because of me case and how the new GTX 295 cooler is by blowing one GPU's heat into the case.

So what case do you have? Maybe get some more fans?

Thanks for the reply,

I have no idea what cooler i have, its the one that came with it :D I bought it 02/06/09 if that helps.

as for the case, i have an Antec 900, so ive got quite a few case fans. I was thinking about getting another fan for the side of the case, as there is a hole there waiting for one, and its right next to the GPU. im not sure it will help tho, as my CPU isnt feeling the burn, and idles around 40.

I tried turning the fan speed up on the gpu and that seemed to bring the temp down quite a bit, but i did turn it up to 100%

The whole thing makes a fair bit of noise with all the fans, but its a really noticeable noise when i turn the gpu fan up.

should i turn it up in order to stop it from dying?

Thanks in advance

seems pretty high. not sure if this helps, but try the newest version 0.3.9 as it's much more accurate than previous versions.

Thanks for the reply,

Just downloaded the lastest version and its giving me the exact same reading :(

EDIT:

Just noticed on a different screen, it says that the 70 is the temp reading from the driver, but the 62 is from some ADT4743 sensor chip.

I don't know what can be considered a high temperature really.

With my EVGA Geforce 260 SSC, I can hit 90-100 degrees in OCCT graphics benchmark without artefacts, but if it ever hits 70 while I play World of Warcraft it can start to artefact and then eventually crash the display driver. Quite annoying anyway, have to always remember ramp the fan speed to 80% everytime I play WoW to prevent it.

Anyway from your newer screenshot, your fan speed is 40%, I'm thinking this is the speed from Automatic fan control. If you use EVGA then grab their precision app and ramp it to 60%, which imo, is still somewhat quiet :)

edit: just ran my card idle for 5mins at 40% and temps are at 45 or so, probably some very bad airflow in your case, make sure at least 1 of the fans are on exhaust. Some cases come with 2 fans that do intake only(!) and as a result trap all the heat, try the tissue test to see which way they blow :)

I know you said you have the 196.21 drivers but just make sure your GPU fan is spinning. There was just a recall of the 196.75 drivers because fans weren't starting and this was causing overheating. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10464475-1.html

You've got the Antec 900... do you have all the case fans turned up to their highest speeds?

Also, check out this post: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/518908.aspx Basically, top + rear fans will cool your system the most, but top + front cool fastest. You might see if your case has positive air pressure.

Definitely seems a tad high. I have always owned Nvidia cards over the years and my current card right now, a GTX 285, is the highest idle temp I have ever seen on a Nvidia card that I have owned, and that is 45. It only goes to about 60 when I play games and stuff, so yeah, that seems high, as I am just using stock cooling as well.

Hmmm just downloaded GPU Z, and it says my Idle temp is 50, while RivaTuner said it was 45. Hmmm.

PCB temeperature in GPUZ is GPU ambient temperature in everest... and opt3 sensor is aprox room temerature. This is all on idle with default cooler, zotac GTX295 single PCB. On Load i never saw it over 77 degrees (and it was overclocked runing OCCT GPU stress test). So ye 70 idle seems high for me, but its also true chips are made to survive 105... but i wouldnt push it that far :)

GPU-Z is pretty accurate and constantly updated. You could try nvidia system tools.

The two PCB version of the GTX295 with the old cooler gets hot. Very hot. The temps you have are about right. Mine used to regularly get to about ~65-70 idle and over 100 max'd (OCCT) before adding some extra side cooling for both intake and exhaust. Now I'm ~45-55 idle and 75-80 max'd (OCCT).

If you look at the top of the card (the side with the two power connectors) you will notice that part of the rear exhaust is going back into the case. If your case can do so, add an side fan above that to help exhaust this excess heat out of the case.

Also, the position of the cards intake fan is a little difficult to get cool air to. If you have a few harddrives in your case, then the front fan will just be blowing warm air into the rest of the PC, unless you have multiple front fans as seen on some cases. Even so, there is never any direct airflow to or over the cards fan. I'm still in the processes of sourcing a case that would adequately cool my GTX295, but in the mean time I'm going to do a simple case mod on the side window to add an extra intake fan. However, even with just the one exhaust fan it does reduce the temps quite a bit.

I'm also using the 196.75 drivers without issue. Same temps as with the 196.21 and no change to fan speed.
