New PC Time - Please Help

Recommended Posts

It's about 2 weeks off but I need help now :D.

  • My proposed budget is ?900 for the base unit and an additional ?150-200 for a monitor.
  • I will at some point be looking towards a dual monitor setup so that needs to be taken into account
  • This will be used for 30% gaming (finished Force Unleashed so moving to Prototype possibly)/ 30% website development, coding, graphic design work, etc/30% general browsing activities, media, etc. I convert video quite a lot for my Zune so the quicker it can do that the better. My XPS 1530 with 2 GHz takes almost the full length of a TV series episode to convert one ...
  • The system will be in my bed room so it needs to be silent! If it has lights I may turn them off ...
  • I don't see myself overclocking at this moment in time so don't take that into account.
  • No need for an OS as I have MSDN access (speaking of which, is Windows 7 Chinese the same as Windows 7 normal is regards to serial keys?)
  • I was considering budgeting a SSD but they appear to be far too expensive so might let it good :(.
  • The system will likely need to last till I finish uni (Jun 11) so please the budget needs to be pushed please advise.
  • Lastly, I am not a super techy like I used to so the budget for monitor/base-unit can be moved around and made smaller to accomodate for a better monitor or case, etc. Just propose something to me :D.

Anything I have missed?

For base unit:

a Sound-proof case like a Coolermaster Sileo 500 could help with the noise but you could look around for one you like.

Some CPU cooler or maybe the Corsair H50-1 Hydro water cooler.

Some SATA DVD RW

550W Corsair CMPSU-550VX

4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-12800

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4 or Asus P7P55D PRO

Intel Core i7 860

1TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3

1GB Asus HD5770

list done from scan.co.uk that should all be under ?900

Did you just suggest I get you build essentially, L.o.L.? Thanks for your help.

Any expectations for the next 2 weeks?

Its just a basic layout that fits your budget of what you could get so if you want a better graphic card you could swap out the i7 with a i5 and if you prefer Western Digital or Seagate you can swap that its just that the Samsung HDD is well priced but still just as good.

Some new NVIDIA cards maybe..they keep getting delayed? I don't know how much their going to be...

Any performance expectations? Better than the current ATI set for the price?

    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
