No change log whatsoever. Likely to contain just minor bug fixes.

Edit: Just installed it. There are no visible changes as you'd expect, however, the installer still insists on adding the icon to the dock, restarting it in the process. Ugh.

As bad as Microsoft Messenger is, it supports A/V conversations, fast file transfers, sending custom emoticons.

Its interface and the lack of Growl notifications are killing me though. Thanks, but I?m sticking with buggy Adium 1.4.2 beta 1, it?s a lot better than 1.4.1.

Well the lack of Growl notifications in my book opens a bigger question as to why such a notification system isn't part of Mac OS X.

Well, someone like .Neo would say : why make one when Growl works?

Someone as simple-minded and impulsive as me would say : Apple should just buy it and stick it in Lion

Seriously, I also think it should be built-in. Growl works beautifully, but because it?s 3rd-party, it?s used by amateur developers but put aside by big devs.

It?s one of the reasons why one of my friend prefers OS X. See, it?s sad because it?s not because of a built-in feature.

iOS 4 has notifications (that don?t work too well right now), Android has notifications (that work well apparently), ? They?re becoming more and more popular and I think every OS should have that built in, period.

You do realise that the majority of people outside the US use Yahoo Instant Messaging and Microsoft Messaging service?

You do realize I'm from the Netherlands, not the United States? MSN was heavily used and by far the most dominant IM protocol, however most people moved on to Facebook and Skype now. MSN is pretty much dying off nowadays here.

I think it's the case elsewhere too, otherwise Microsoft wouldn't start supporting Facebook on Windows Live Messenger for Windows.

Sort of hate it when people put words in my mouth, I'm perfectly capable of expressing opinions all on my own... But okay... ;)

In this case I'm glad Mac OS X doesn't have a build-in notification system like Growl. Not because there's a perfectly fine third-party solution - most of the time I prefer Apple's build-in solutions to others - but because I hate nagware. It's one of the reasons I can't stand Windows and enjoy working with Mac OS X more: It doesn't constantly bug you with what's going on behind the scenes.

  • 8 months later...

Have used Adium and Trillian in the past with Mac but stopped because we use Windows Live Messenger at work and make fairly heavy use of groups. Neither of those allows for named groups that stay around (as opposed to ad hoc group creation). When I got messenger for mac (8.0) I was excited that I would be able to transparently use mac for some work stuff and no one the wiser. Sadly, I can't find any way to join group in mac version. Hopefully I'm missing it and someone can point me to how to do it (or an alternative if it exists).

Thanks

    • Can you read? I've said I'm willing to pay more for a notchless (no notch) 3:2 screen.
    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • make your own notch - it's not that hard
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
