Thanks Chasethebase! How does one go about applying for the news team by the way? And are there perks? :D

There is a page on Neowin which has all the information you need. That happens to be here.

Sound quality of the videorecorder is very good, the mic supresses noise and in the call you can enable noise reduction and so on. There are various videos on Youtube too to demonstrate mic quality in videos.

Ahh sweet. Probably be able have an audible phone call whilst out at a club or bar.

I'm exploring a haunted house tomorrow with a mate of mine (previous Urbex pics here: http://robbiekhan.co.uk ) so expect an update demoing the HD camcorder being put to actual use instead of just some trees, cars and **** ;)

But the iPhone 4 changes "everything", again!

;)

Sounds great man.

Decent review mrk, really like the photos you took of the handset (Y)

If I were to get an Android handset, this would definitely be the one (I love the build quality/hardware specs) but my iPhone 4 currently does everything I want :p

Great review, thanks!

The only thing that keeps me from getting this phone is TouchWiz; I've heard only bad things about it.

I think I'll wait for the HTC Sensation.

TouchWiz provides quite a few intuitive features. Features like adjusting brightness by running your finger along the notification bar, able to play most, if not all, media formats out of the box. TouchWiz 4 is also a great improvement on 3. Gone is the black background in the application launcher, animations are fluid and not overdone and the apps themselves have improved.

I'd have to play around with stock android again to notice the difference as I have been accustomed to it. In reality, Sense is all about looks whereas TouchWiz is about functionality. I like Sense but it doesn't have features that really improve on the Android system.

I like the simple black theme you have on your phone.

Just wondering What theme are you using for GO launcher? Which snowstrom skin are you using? The folders you have in app drawer , are they stock Samsung or did you customize them too (HOW)? I hope you can get to answer these question. which widget do you have on homescreen for battery information and what skin? Getting my SG II in couple of days and can't wait to get a similar looking theme as in the photos :).

Thanks all, I use a Canon EOS 40D dSLR< it's 5~ years old but was top of its game and is still good today :p

Hi there,

All the info is at the bottom of my original post :) The folders are part of the Go Launcher EX and the Snowstorm is the weather widget using the built in Sketch theme with custom colours :)

Excellent review. I had been debating between the Atrix and S2 and this review affirms my decision for the S2. There might be some smaller annoyances as noted with in OP, but there's nothing that cannot be fixed with some simple rooting and apps.

Great review, thanks!

Can always go back to vanilla android or use a launcher of your preference but touchwiz 4 isn't as bad as 3 was. Certainly not something worth holding back on when look at phone as a whole compared to the rubbish HTC is serving up. This phone would be a lot better choice then the HTC sensation.

The SGS2 is probably the best well balanced feature smartphone on the market now and will be for a while. Most other devices at the moment you have to make a compromise to enjoy it and over look something (HTC battery life and updates, motorola & HTC bootloader locking, sonys laggy as UI etc) This device seems to balance nearly everything perfectly and you're hard picked to find any actual flaw.

Ah that's a pretty clear explanation thanks! if it does use a similar chip then this could also mean that camcorder recordings could further be improved as well?

I don't see why not. :) Depends how good/bad the SGS II is out of the box I suppose as to whether there is any improvement to be made

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
