Panda Bear
I've just got a new HP dv6 laptop which has 4 usb ports, the two on the right have a standard usb 2.0 symbol and work with my devices but the two on the left have a similar symbol but it says ss as part of the symbol, i'm assuming this is the symbol for usb 3.0. the problem with these ports is that they currently do not do anything when i plug a usb 2.0 device in, i could be wrong but i was under the impression 3.0 ports would be backward compatable any help with this issue would be great
FiB3R
Yes, the ports should be backwards compatible. I would assume that as the laptop is new, all drivers would be installed. Everything looking rosy in the device manager?

giantpotato
You might have to enable Legacy support to get the ports to work with USB 2.0 devices.
