6 year old finds porn on PSP

Tamatha Tovar bought her son a late Christmas present over the Easter weekend, a brand new PSP from Wal-Mart in Manatee County, Florida reports myfoxboston.

When 6 year old Eliso turned on the PSP for the first time however, the background had been set to a picture of a naked woman. Frightened he would be grounded Eliso ran to his mum crying to show her. Tamatha then found a memory card in the PSP filled with pornographic material which she claims is not hers and was already in the box.

In shock Tamatha phoned Wal-Mart asking to speak with the manager and explain the situation.

"I explained the situation and his response was, "well, bring the machine down and we'll let your son pick out a new game," Tamatha then continued to say "and I was like, no I don't think you heard what I said."

A spokesperson for Wal-Mart has said they are looking into what happened and they were concerned over the matter. Ms Tovar has told Wal-Mart she wants a new PSP to replace the one she bought and an apology from the company.

Cases like this are sadly not unheard of and it was only in March where Sony received bad publicity after a Kentucky man was accused of trying to persuade an 11 year old Humble girl to send him nude photos while they played games online together. Neowin's Garrett Dodd covered the story back in March.

I think people are ignoring the most suspicious part of the article: the lady is demanding a new PSP to replace the one she bought.

Why would she need a whole new PSP? She clearly understands the memory card had the porn on it. She doesn't want a free extra game, just an exchange? Isn't that kind of sketchy? Why do I get the feeling someone dropped their PSP or damaged the screen right before finding this magic porn?

This has happened before to wlmart. A few month's back it was with an Ipod and a 5yr old girl got stuck watching S&M. They don't bother checking their returns.

I don't think she's blowing it out of proportion. There are many issues with this situation:

1. Her 6 year old son was put into a situation that she obviously did not agree with and was helpless to "protect" against.

2. She purchased a new PSP, but it may not have been new.

2a. If it was a Walmart issue, they need tighter policies on checking merchandise upon return and instead of putting them back on the shelf, they should be labeled as "clearance" items.

People should not be paying full retail price for something that has already left the store. Would you want / expect to pay full retail for a vehicle that was previously sold? I won't...

2b. If it was a Sony issue, they need tighter policies regarding equipment inspection and testing coming off the assembly line.

Accidents do happen, but the nature of it being an accident doesn't negate the responsibility of the party at fault. The child should get a brand new PSP in exchange for the old one / memory card, but since he likely wasn't traumatized over the incident, that's all he should get.

This is hardly a new story. How many times do children have to see porn on a "new" device before companies start implementing procedures to properly erase data from returned devices?

Anyone else smell a lawsuit?

Erm... ever heard of format? I never brought a PSP, but if they don't come with memory cards as standard he got a free memory card with his, he should shut the hell up and get on with it!

I think a free game is a perfect compensation for a simple problem. She is trying to get it hyped up so she can get money. Possibly so she can keep hording food from her son, from the looks of it. :O

That reporter was hyping it up too wasn't he. Like he was covering an earthquake story. Had to watch it with the sound off as couldn't stand him.

most probably was a PSP that someone else returned and they didnt bother to check the memory card before re-selling it

Yep,
She's eagerly awaiting her lawyers response to the possibility of suing for irreparable damages to her kid, plus false advertising, as the unit wasn't new.

He saw a naked person? Oh my god! Is he ok? I hope the paramedics got to him in time.

This country is so screwed up.

Humm is anyone else besides Fox reporting on this.. I would not trust this story if it is just coming from FOX. I think they still have McCain ahead in the polls.

Translation: "I want money money money money ...."

What is she expecting from Walmart? They didn't open up the box, put in a porno memory card, re-seal it, and put it on the shelf.

I bought a used zune from a girl off craigslist. I met her right in front of walmart where she worked, she had all the badges and out fit on. I got it home it had like 6 porn movies on it. It also had pics of some guy with his girl, not porn. It looked liked i bought a return because not one picture was of her. Im glad i cleared it before i gave it to my son of 13.

Doesn't surprise me...

A small company I used to work for years ago purchased a Packard Bell PC from a popular electrical retailer in Australia. After a week of using it the thing died (motherboard). They ended up getting a replacement PC. A few weeks later we get a call from a woman who just purchase the same model PC from the same store and find all our company data on the PC. Needless to say the retailer was sued...

It does happen!

Always wipe your PC before giving it away.

I once worked in a store doing repairs. It's funny when you're working on their PC and stumble upon their homemade porn.

I just fail to see why this is a big deal. Yeah, they gave her a returned item (which is kinda dirty if it was sold as new), but they offered a new game, and I'm sure they'd have no problem accepting the PSP back either. A "sorry" from a faceless corporation (or some random dude in mangement) is about as worthless as things get - why the big fuss?

Oh right; Fox news. :-/

You fail to see the big deal? Porn isn't intended for 6-year olds. Let us know if you require further explanation.

why should walmart have to apologize? Unless they reboxed a used returned one as new, they should have no fault in it... if the thing came that way from sony, then it's sony's fault

It's Walmart's fault because they sold the product. If it was a used PSP that was re-boxed as a new one (without checking it), then it's even worse...

She bought something that was obviously a return then. Swapping it out for one that wasn't messed with isn't an unrealistic expectation. Albeit, this incident isn't really that bad as it was just a naked woman. Be glad it wasn't goatse.

but who'd put goatse as their background?
