Facebook launches new Ticker, only to take it away

There was a social network uproar on Twitter today over Facebook's new sidebar ticker, which showed all of your friends latest activity, including recent posts, activities, what they've been doing and more. The sidebar feature called "Ticker" was briefly available to users before being taken down for unknown reasons.

Many users believed Facebook had launched a new feature, but the reaction may have been less than positive. Facebook users instantly turned to Twitter to share their opinions about the new sidebar application, which may have prompted Facebook to take it down, possibly to tweak things before re-launching again.

Facebook hasn't officially posted any information about the launch of the sidebar ticker or the removal of the feature. It could have accidentally been pushed to millions of Facebook users, but for whatever reason, Facebook has removed it from view for everyone.

One Neowin reader named Tyler managed to snap a screen capture of the feature before Facebook removed it. Just based on the photo, you can see why many users might possibly be upset, the feature could be a huge privacy concern for many, alerting all your friends when you signed on.

I saw this a couple weeks ago when they were first testing the new sidebar to begin with (before it had "Other Online Friends," just the ones they matched you with). I also saw a few weeks ago, I believe it was a glitch, some of my news posts were grouped together (like if several images were uploaded at once) and displayed differently. I was also able to mark individual posts as "Highlights."

Thats a bit upsetting, when I sent in the picture and everything I was actually hoping this feature would stick, I actually thought it was a very nice and useful feature. I was actually quite sad when it was removed.

I do hope that the Facebook team will tweak the ticker and then bring it back. Hmm, "Tweak the Ticker" could be a nice campaign slogan.

Oh well, we shall see what happens.

I had it before yesterday as well, and now it's gone again.

I'm tired of facebook not properly testing their stuff before dumping it on us, tbh. The whole chat thing...

I dont even mind the changes, but at least do it right. Also , people are right. the ticker was a weird mix between the "top news" and the "most recent" feed

Honestly: is there any way FB can change anything and there is no 'uproar' complete with 'bring back whatthefrakever' campaigning?

Saw this a month or so ago, right before they launched the new chat sidebar. I had it for about 8 hours and then was told I didn't have the correct permissions.

Saw it earlier today...was wondering why I should care about my friend commenting on a post of someone I don't know.

I still find that interesting. I think it's nice to see how friends interact with other people.

How priceless is this? People complaining about privacy on a social networking website? All it's doing is taking information already accessible by your friends and consolidating it in one single place.
If you're all so butthurt about what your boss/wife/bit on the site sees then maybe you shouldn't have a facebook profile at all.

The problem for me isn't the information/privacy, but that more than half of what it showed there was redundant and already in your feed. Can you say information overload?

Saw the Tickler today, thought it was a nice addition as it showed me something's the main page wasn't at the time (facebook is giving me grief alot of the time) i used it a few times when commenting to a friend and it seemed to work well. As mentioned though it does not have privercy concerns because any info you post on someone else's profile can be seen if allowed. If you were my friend and i posted on one of my friends profiles you would see "Xoligy posted on whoever's status" and i belive if you click it and the profile is open you see what i wrote if not i think you just get a profile page.

As for chat, i never use that feature unless i have no choice i hate the new look and the side bar i just wish my notifications would reset to "0" im on 60 and its climbing getting annoying having to check it all time.

You're nearly right Your friends only see a story in either the Ticker or your Profile feed when the friend you've interacted with has either set the privacy of his/her posts to 'Everyone' or the privacy of his/her Wall posts to 'Everyone' (depending on whether you've commented on his/her status or written on his/her Wall). They won't even see an entry in your feed about you commenting on their Wall or status anymore if the post of theirs isn't public. Of course, you'll see that story in your feed even if your friends can't because you have access to his status or Wall posts.

Actually the ticker was on for me for a few weeks, then it went. Then it came back and went again quickly.

What can I say? It's Facebook.

They were testing it, and likely still are. Testing features with a small subset of users is the best way for Facebook to refine them. You "It's Facebook" comment sounded negative, but them testing the features in this way is positive for all users.

They probably are, but I'd prefer an opt in/out method, than randomly seeing things come up then vanish again.

Yes it was said negatively, and meant that way. A lot of users i've spoken to are unhappy about changes that have occured with little (or no) notification. "It suddenly appeared!".
Lets not get on the topic of whether it was a positive change or not...

Hmmmm? I had something like this about a month ago, before they took it away then, too. Was I a beta tester?

Yeah same, I was really confused when all my friends were talking about getting it today!

Yes, I would like to see that fixed positioned as well.

The ticker is still there (I checked 3 different Facebook-accounts) when playing "games". Most games now have an extra option "game privacy" where one can set "only me" to show game-activity in the ticker to... only you. Default setting however is "friends".
This new ticker (and game-setting) did not appear on all Facebook-accounts at the same time. There where some days to roll this out.
I realy hope they remove it asap.

That's a different Ticker, and that appears in the Games section only. The Ticker this article refers to is one that showed News Feed stories on was displayed above the Chat sidebar on pretty much every Facebook page for an hour or two today.

They need to remove the damned 'people you may know' box. I am getting sick of seeing it. It is even worse on the mobile app because they shove the damed thing in at the top of your feed.

I find that useful sometimes, and so do many of us. It's not hard to ignore even in the mobile app.

It's near impossible to ignore. Ignore != scroll past and not care for it.

Okay. It's not hard to scroll past, not care about it, and not let it get to one

Horrible, bloated. .And worst of all they removed the birthsdays box. I'd rather know who's birthday it is than a stupid newsfeed.

No, they didn't. The Birthdays box was still there on the Home page. The Birthdays box had actually changed as well; it didn't display any text other than the names of those whose birthdays it was, and when one clicked on those names, it showed more information in the same way clicking on a Ticker story did, allowing one to post on people's Walls from within that popup.

Fantastic, more worthless data for my brain to consume.

I find the information interesting, after all, we use Facebook to keep up with our friends.

Indeed, it is. But sometimes, the information gets too much for me.

I found it especially annoying since, while not all info was presented in your news feed but accessible elsewhere only, still more than 50% was redundant and already in your feed. Talk about stressing your mind with more stuff than you need to see...

I've been hoping they'll return the Ticker and then replace the News Feed with something that doesn't provide redundant data.

I hate that it follows you as you scroll the News Feed. I think that the Ticker should be something you can toggle on/off just like Chat.

Maybe they disabled it so they could make such improvements

I got to see the sidebar. Really wasn't a bad addition, but it did seem to be a little in the way at the same time.

I hate it because it just repeats what I can already see in the News Feed.
Plus, it still displays friends you "muted" from News Feed, so it's info overload all over again.

Exactly. I mean, what was the point? It's just a redundant feature. I mean, I suppose it's nice if you navigate to someone's profile and then you see something in the ticker, but are people really that obsessed with having an up-to-the-second stalking ability? You're just going to go back to the news feed in a minute or two.

I see your point there, I am not on facebook 24/7 like alot of folks out there neither do I get upset if I get unfriended like some that I know.

I also got to see it yesterday and was already looking for ways to turn it off. Like CHAOSKane, I'm not all the time on Facebook and I don't use it to stalk my friends activity on it.
