Earlier this month, Internet Archive added yet another software collection, this time a plethora of classic Mac OS emulators and programs. The nifty thing about this development, however, is that you can run them within your web browser; previously, it took a downloadable emulator that could be run as a standalone program.
The two versions of Mac OS are System 6 (version 6.0.8) and System 7 (version 7.0.1). Aside from those, there are games including Dark Castle, Frogger, Space Invaders and Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.02, some of which have pretty weird controls.
As for other software, there are some familiar names including MacWrite, MacPaint, Microsoft Chart and Microsoft Multiplan, a predecessor to Excel. If you like programming, there are also MacBASIC and Microsoft Basic applications you can play around with.
With Internet Archive uploading all of this software onto its website, it has become infinitely more accessible to users that might not know how to set up an emulator. Educational institutions will likely be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the ease of access.
All the software is downloadable; therefore, it can be run locally. However, for most use cases, running the emulator in full-screen mode should suffice. For those looking to indulge themselves more deeply into the Mac landscape of the time, Internet Archive hosts many historic editions of Macworld magazines.
