Iran to create its own Internet

Iran has inserted itself into headlines again. Instead of using psychological warfare and other efforts to create obstacles for the West, Iran is launching a different kind of war. Iran is launching a war on the Internet and is creating its own. This is another effort by Iran to decrease the influences of the West, according to the original Wall Street Journal article.

Iran’s telecommunications chief claims that, in two years time, all Iranians will be forced to use a internal, state-controlled (censored) Internet. He says about 60 percent of homes and business will be on the new Internet even sooner. The Islamic state sees it as a way to uphold Islamic moral values. One wonders if they can truly block the world’s Internet.

Iran has been facing problems in its own country due to the proliferation of pro-democracy blogs and anti-regime activity since the uprisings in other Middle Eastern nations started earlier this year. Top officials support internet regulation as a way to stop what they see as a war waged by the West.

Iran will roll out a parallel network with the current one and then make a full and final switch to its own Internet. The 11 percent of Iranians, or approximately 8.5 million people, who have internet access, will be forced to use a non-Microsoft operating system and a national search engine called “Ya Hagh” (Oh, Justice).

The thing that makes the Internet interesting is that you have access to the entire world. Otherwise you are stuck playing on the Intranet. I wonder how the people will feel about this, or react, since only 11% are on, may not be enough. I also think it will not be equal access, as people with money might be able to get more access... I guess it is a major volley of information control. Scary... especially if you are not ignorant of the fact.

I'm personally amazed they have the money to actually launch this undertaking. This is a herculean task even if it is for one country.

They would simply cut the the budget of some departments like education or agriculture and spend it on this stupid network.

I don't hate Iran, I dislike its government. They are extremely oppressive towards their people. In addition, I do believe they engage in acts of war and their leaders are mostly crazies. I have the right as a journalist to express that point of view. I have watched good people die indirectly or directly because of that regime, even though I have never been in Iran. So you may express your opinion as well, but please show me some respect and do not call me hateful.

"Maybe Anon can hack into this "internet" and flood it with 4Chan content... "
i think middle eastern culture already has enough CP.

(Oh, Justice)

That says it all right there!!
How dumb

Between the dude that runs this country and that nut job in N. Korea, I don't know who's worse?

imagine big corperations based out of Iran, The internet is a necessity for big modern corporations, it'll either drive them out of the country or run them down to the ground... right!?

iRanet of course! And they will use Macs. What? They did merely say non-Microsoft

The U.S and U.K govt already censor the internet, so there's no much difference. Google remove protest videos for the uk and u.s govt all the time and remove listings, change page rankings, rig the vote counts etc.

You don't have the slightest clue what's going on in iran. Just STFU.

North Korea runs such a network already. But, given that Iran is likely to maintain an outside Internet connection for officials and the well-connected, it could be hacked from the outside. And the Iranians are not the most technically adept, from what their experience with Stuxnet shows.

MORE sanctions! This is crime against humanity! If there was any chance of uprising in Iran like that of Egypt, they killed it with this.

So it's just an intranet?

No, that would be a closed off network that still resides within the tubes of the internet, it's just hidden off. What they're doing is having a replica Internet (with tubes and all) built alongside and will eventually replace the internet we all know and love.

Not replace our internet, replace their internet. (Unless you live in Iran in which case your speech is correct)

Not much different from stopping mail, package/parcel delevery at the border, much like US Customs and such have the right to do in the USA.
So, good for them.
Every country has the right to control what goes in and out whether physical or digital.
And the people have the right to complain when they can't contact those outside.
So, we'll see how far this goes and how long this lasts.

Except the country shouldn't control its internet, and Iranians have no freedom of speech priviliges so they don't have the right to complain.

Also, this nothing like US customs stopping mail. That's done for national safety - this is forcing beliefs on an entire nation and a complete abuse of power. Way way way way WAY different.

Maybe the closed minded people will adopt to it, but not others... so much for freedom on the net for Iranians

Forced to use an OS they probably don't want to view a handful of sites that have been "purified" by the state. I suppose using a proxy to get outside to the real world will probably be a capital offense as well.

Hopefully sooner than latter.

Learn to read the whole article instead of just the headline.

Xerax said,
How is stopping people using Windows going to change anything? Lmao.

They'll be using a government controlled OS. Think of your school where they block quite a few sites, at least mine does, but not just the internet is controlled. The whole OS is controlled by the government, and ALL sites are blocked except government approved ones.

wtf. Great firewall of China in Iran.

Not even close, with the firewall and all I just use a VPN/SSH and I get through to the outside fine. What they are proposing is a totally separate network physically, so there's no way to access outside material using this new network.

Tech Star said,

This is like the GFOC but on super steroids... and then inside a massive bubble. What they're proposing is to essentially snip the interweb tubes from Iran altogether so they're completely disconnected from the rest of the internet. Even China uses the same internet the rest of the world does, they're just accessing it through a massive proxy.

Their leaders will surely use it as a tool of propaganda

+1. If the revolts have shown us anything in the past several months, it's that people despise this type of tyranny.

yowan said,

That is if they can get it in place first, the youth and young adults will revolt. I think they will end up killing a lot of their population.

This won't go over too well with the Iranian people. The majority of the population are youth and young adults, and unlike North Korea, they aren't blind as to what's really happening in their government.

Will daddy be paying for your ticket? Or will the non existant jobs in that country. Oh and where are you going exactly? Your neighboring countries aren't much of an improvement and won't let you in anyways. Not to mention the rest of the world thinks you are a terrorist so they wont accept you either.

Ignorant people like you don't understand the gravity of their situation.

Capr is right, there is very little an Iranian can do to escape Iran unless born into wealth.

Why leave when it looks like you'll just bring it all with you anyways? You're suppose to be getting away from all of that, not continue it.....

Remember Neda Agha Soltan. This regime cannot be allowed to stand. I pray for the day the Iranian people rise up and smash these idiots that oppress and abuse them. Enough already.

hey, if we're lucky this will be the last drop that will push the people over the edge and into revolution. Small groups of people in power should not have the capabilities to push their believes on a whole country. Freedom and freeagency is what God entitled us all with and any group forcing their believes upon another one is bound to fail.

Well well, either you are ignorant and have no idea how world politics works or you know very well that for your country to survive you must milk all weaker countries, all
How many of these post revolution countries are enjoying "freedom" and "democratic"?
This world war 3 fought on information scale sickens me.

Good. And what exactly are France, Aussies and Kiwis waiting for?

And while they're at it, might wanna revise some basic network concepts, kick out legacy, revise security and implement standards that are actually standards. If they can pull that off, I'm a happy guy.

With their known and proven level of security I don't honestly thing any iranians have to worry too much about this actually being successful.
