Kinect beats Apple, becomes fastest selling device in gadget history

There is something to be said about having the fastest selling device in gadget history, it means you have a hot product. Apple managed to claim this title with its iPad after selling 2 million iPads in just 2 months.

According to Readwriteweb.com, Microsoft sold 2.5 million Kinect's in the first 25 days which means they are averaging 100,000 units a day. At this rate, Microsoft has taken the title of fastest selling gadget in history from Apple as it is selling twice as fast as the iPad.

Selling 100,000 units a day is an incredible number for Microsoft as the device must be attached to an Xbox 360. Microsoft clearly has a hit on its hands, and is adding valuable life to the aging Xbox 360.

The Kinect brings new life to the Xbox 360. Its revolutionary controller free setup allows access to a new demographic of gamers. While the launch hasn't been without its flaws, and Kinect still could use a bit of refinement, Microsoft has hit a homerun with its latest offering.

Microsoft has done a great job reinventing themselves the last couple of years. Windows 7 is a hit, Office 2010 is a hit, Kinect is a hit, IE9 is a hit etc. Congrats to Microsoft - we all win when the Apples, Googles and Microsofts of the world try and trump each other with the best products.

The amount of people purchasing it for their PC to hack will be insignificant at best. What makes this amazing is the amount of XBOX users out there willing to shell out additional monies on top of the already expensive titles to get this "GADGET". That is a testament to the XBOX's longevity and popularity.

I wonder if they will break their 5 million mark for X-MAS.

I was PS3 fan but after Sony's decision to add more advertisement to buy things on their console with firmware updates and killed the option to install linux plus their policy of everything becoming more expensive. I am planning to get xbox 360 once I get a job. They are lacking totally in innovation. In response to Kinect what they came with is Wii style controller. No wonder they are loosing market share.

Those of you insisting this is a dumb comparison need to understand something.

The iPad was a first generation product with no prior history in the market, and same goes for the Kinect. If you are a true gizmo expert, you'd know market adoption for new products is not easy. In this case, both products did well and the Kinect did a better job doing so.

Sure the price is lower, but I personally think the Kinect and the iPad are both overpriced for what their purpose is. So price does't matter if you ask me at that point.

Well said but to add the most important part like someone said above, this isn't a comparison the iPad was the last gadget to hold the title it didn't really even need to be mentioned in the article and it really has no bearings on the fact that it now belongs to Kinect.

Normally when you say something breaks a record, you say what the previous record was and what held it, otherwise there is nothing to compare the figures to. Of course it has a bearing on the article.

People complaining about an article for no reason at all.

No company gets everything right all the time but when they do just give them praise. The Apple vs Microsoft gets lame very quickly. As many things as people think Microsoft gets wrong they get many things right. T

A gadget is a gadget. A Kinect is a gadget and an IPAD is a gadget.

I remember when they unveiled this as Natal and Paul Thurrott said on the June 5, 2009 Windows Weekly (http://www.twit.tv/ww110) podcast at about the 42:50 mark that this was vapor-ware and pretty much was a joke, at least largely in comparison to what was shown at the E3 announcement.

I am very glad that it wasn't vapor-ware or a joke.

Lets be honest, when has Microsoft (or many of the large players) been known for vapour-ware?

I'm curious as to how many sales were made by hackers wanting to mess around with it? Lol some of them buying not just one, but 2 of them at times

I seriously doubt its even a five figure number.

Kudos to microsoft, kinect has surely pushed us into a new wave of future. Let's face it - microsoft is absolutely loving the popularity gained by all the hacking. I don't see them ever closing out the hackers!

Utterly bored of Kinect and the crap games released with it already. Same goes for Move, but that may get some decent game support one day... Waste of money so far.

This friggin Microsoft IS making a big ass change, for good. Nobody can deny it. If they do something equally revolutionary with Windows 8, I'll pee (had to edit becuase of stupid baby censoring) my pants and put it on YouTube.

Well that is good. This news will make it very attractive to developers and that alone makes me more interested in it.

Why does this matter? I mean you're almost literally comparing apples and oranges.

Not everything has to be an Apple v. Microsoft fight to the death.

No their saying the Kinect is the fastest selling gadget of all time... their not really comparing it to the iPad it's compared to all gadgets, it just happens to be the last gadget to claim to be the fastest selling was the iPad...

Cos its relevant.

g/f bought the kinect for xmas and gave it to me (or us) just before Thanksgiving. We've been using it quite a bit since. We just got Your Shape and Kinect Sports and have been enjoying Kinect quite a bit.

Obviously I'll take breaks to play Assassin's Creed, Fable and others. But the Kinect is very cool. I would say it's slightly more awe-inspiring than the first time using an iPhone or Wii. If you consider what it's trying to do and acoomplish... it's nothing less than breathtaking.

It won't be for hardcore-only folks. But for gamer gamers (those who play the gammut of games from teh haloz to teh pegglez - what I call truly Core Gamers) should really consider giving it a try.

I can't wait until the "choose your own adventure action movie hybrid kinect game in the sci-fi/trhiller genres" come out. It's the New Experiences that I most anticipate.

Great job, xbox!

Yes!! It's not what it has now but the potential!!

No a gadget to gadget comparison is perfectly fine... if you want to know what gadget is the best selling one ever you need to compare it to all or rather the current best selling one right? no matter if the serve different functions or have different price tags... sigh

Elliott said,

What gadgets did the ipad beat out to become the fastest selling? Because i imagine it beat out things that were not tablets, so thus the iPad could not be the fastest selling either because it was different from what it beat? In that case then no gadget is the fastest selling, because they are all in their specific categories.

Elliott said,

AND what about the fact that you need an Xbox to use Kinect. That limits its ability to sell. PS3 fanboys would buy an iPad but most likely not Kinect. The iPad had nothing similar (netbooks hmm).

Apple never made any claims to begin with.

It was MS who made the stupid comparison in thw first

It's not included in gadgets. Sorry for wikipedia:

"A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty."

Assuming this definition is correct, then the iPad and Kinect would be included (in my opinion of course), where-as the iPhone wouldn't. Novelty items are much harder to sell than necessities like a mobile phone.

thommcg said,
Kinect is what, one third the price of an iPad and offers entirely different functionality?!

A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technological objects at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos

Very well copy and pasted... My point is, so? They're completely different of course sales ought differ. Show Playstation Move sales for the same period would be more useful.

Yes, key word "Gadget". There is a thread that started a few weeks ago on this and people went into the "they are not the same, you cant compare". We are not trying to compare them on what they do but what they are, electronic devices/gadgets.

thommcg said,

Gadgets means phones, mp3 players, laptops, GPS systems... The article wasnt meant as a comparison of same type products, but gadgets in general.

thommcg said,

Oh no, it's awful car analogy time!

"BMW sells twice as many Minis as Aston Martin sells V8 Vantages"

Well, duh, stupid article. Minis are 1/4 the price!

"BMW Mini becomes fastest selling car in history"

Excellent article! That's pretty awesome for BMW!

Who held the previous record is irrelevant if you just beat it.

thommcg said,

And Microsoft trounced Sony Move too. If Kinect is the fastest selling gadget in history, one could assume that that would include other gadgets, such as Move. Keep in mind, that Kinect is a peripheral, which historically would have rather low adoption compared to a standalone device, AND that it also requires that a customer purchase an XBox (Or have an XBox), which would bring the cost in line with that of the iPad's... I seem absolutely no problem with comparing Kinect sales to another gadget's sales (ie: iPad), particularly given they in turn compared iPad's sales to other gadget sales, not all of which were comparable in a feature or line by line comparison...

Nit picking something like this is a bit silly IMO, as it's comparing sales to sales is a rational comparison...

thommcg said,

If you add in the price of the XBox, the price difference is not so much different.

As for functionality, ya they are different, as the Kinect itself is technically more advanced, and when paired with the XBox about 100x the computing power.

(Still sad that a $150 netbook from Walmart can load web pages and run more advanced software than an iPad. If Apple really wanted to create a new device, they should have at least tried to get the computing power up enough to be halfway usable. Seriously, have you tried to edit a large spreadsheet on an iPad or painfully wait for web pages to paint on the screen slower than most freaking phones.)

Seriously? How freaking old is your computer?

Go look up the iPad web page tests, a freaking ZuneHD beats it, let alone an Android or WP7 phone.

The last set of tests I reviewed had the original Intel Atom Netbooks from a couple of years ago at nearly 10x the speed of the iPad at loading web pages, and this was using freaking IE8 on the netbooks.

A Kinect requires an Xbox 360 to be worth anything, no? And an Xbox 360 would bring up that price? Along with the fact that a lot of people buying Kinect are buying an Xbox along with it since this is a whole new demographic to go after? Your price point is moot.

I was wondering when the Apple fans would come crying.

Sorry my friend, but that's the whole purpose of having a business lol.

The Wii was a hot item as well and look at it now. Most people's Wiis are just collecting dust.

And yet is sold like hotcakes over the last month still beating the PS3.

This would be interesting if these products had anything in common. It's like comparing Apples and Oranges. (No pun intended.) I mean, there's even a large gap in the price between these two products.

It's an accessory for a system with a tens of million installed base vs a brand new item to create a market between smartphones and laptops.

They're still both gadgets... What do you think it should be compared to? If it's going to earn the place as fastest selling gadget it needs to be compared to all gadgets specially the one holding that title... sigh...

I'm the 360 hardcore gamer in my house... and, go figure, it was my wife's idea to get a Kinect... and we both ended up loving it! She saw it on Ellen, and wanted one because of that. Surprising what a talk show like Ellen's will make your significant other want to buy.

Recently Ellen had Windows Phone 7 on her show as well, and ended up giving the entire audience an HTC Surround. As much as that hardware is not considered the premiere device (aka the Samsung Focus, or the HTC HD7), it will still gain lots of exposure as a result, and will push its success as well, just like Ellen did for the Kinect!

I have one, I'm very excited and congrats Microsoft for making such an awesome experience reality and affordable for everyone.

In a sense they have.. They never really failed in the XBox department, so they're only improving their reputation in this field, not getting anything back from the areas they lost it in.

Exactly. The Xbox wasn't their problem, hence why they rely on it in every financial report Good for the them, Kinect is quite cool. Although I still prefer holding something over nothing.

The xbox is a loss leader for the licensing of games. The whole division basically breaks even.

Office and windows is what's keeping them afloat.

Don't they rely on Windows and Office every financial report? If they relied on Xbox, they would most definitely not be breaking profit records.

I think they are just thinking in terms of profit made from the actual console which is a mistake. The majority of the profit to be had in consoles is made through selling games and accessories like kinnect.

You are correct and one is a lot cheaper than the other, standalone. However, you do have to have an Xbox in order to use it so it about evens out. With that said, Apple has a much stronger consumer pull and this further shows that Microsoft can as well with their key brands. Did this need to be proven? No, but it's nice to see when Microsoft does "get" what consumers like.

I think this is the first time consumers are buying something after having a good experience trying it, despite the overall bad reviews and an underwhelming presentation event. It wasn't easy to pull but they did it so Kudos to Microsoft.
