Next Xbox image suggests "Xbox Infinity" as name

A leaked image, rising in popularity on both Twitter and Reddit, details a potential name for the upcoming Xbox. The new console, codenamed "Durango", is set for a May 21st reveal by Microsoft.

"Xbox Infinity" is what the image suggests, and corroborates with numerous rumors suggesting the same name. A previously leaked image purporting to be an official leak, however, had no mention of the "Infinity" name.

The previously leaked image may tie in with rumors that Microsoft would simply drop the '360' from the name and simply call its new console "Xbox", following the lead of Apple whose third-gen iPad was simply called "iPad" instead of "iPad 3".

"Infinity", however, makes sense as a name, if the taglines were to be along the lines of "Infinite Entertainment". The company have been able to capitalise on the fact customers use their consoles as home entertainment systems as well as gaming machines, with many users replacing DVD players altogether in favour of just a console.

Will we see more Windows Phone and Live Tile integration with Xbox Infinity? Will we see all of the rumored innards and will the console require a constant internet connection to work? It all remains to be seen. For now, all know for sure is all questions will be answered on May 21st at Microsoft's Campus, and streamed live to the world.

Infinity is a great name. Then again, Project Natal was a better name than Kinect. So, MS will probably bungle this and name the console something stupid right before launch. ...like Xbox Next...

Hellooo??? Think about what 720 means... 720 degrees... two revolutions. Two circles. A figure 8 perhaps... Its just a logo that represents 720. Nothing more.

Doesn't the image make it seem more like Xbox "Infinite" not Xbox "Infinity"? Seeing the tag line below of "Infinite ...".

I figured they wouldn't go with the 720 name. It makes the 360 name look like a joke (which it is), and it may confuse some people by making them think the games output at 720p. (ALL of the games WILL output at least 1080p, WON'T THEY?)

But "Infinity" is a goofy name also. Almost as bad as naming Metro the "Modern" interface. Won't it be awkward when it becomes obsolete? I mean, when it's time for a new console to replace it, what name would be higher than "Infinity"? Come to think of it, it may hint at what sort of future they see for consoles past this upcoming generation - since they're basically becoming walled-garden PCs.

That's a problem they'll have many years to solve, if the Xbox 360's lifespan is of any indication. And I think the next generation of consoles should last as least as long as the current one did.

So don't expect any newer console until they find something greater than infinity?

I don't buy these images. The name is possible, but Visual Studio already uses a form of the infinity symbol, and the logo/type treatment is out of step with the rest of Microsoft's branding.

IMHO, what's the new xbox will need is a shocking exclusive game.
Bungie is not more an exclusive of Xbox and Gear of Wars right now it is nothing special.

The problem is my issue with the naming was always the 'XBOX' bit not the suffix -_- I don't know why, I've just never been able to like that name, Infinity is a cool bit on it though, doesn't surprise me to have that on the name at all ^^

I hope it's not true. Not only because "Xbox Infinity" is a terrible name, but the logo is driving me nuts already. Why is the infinity symbol an exponent? Lame, all around.

Because it is exponentially more than Xbox by a factor of infinity.

But the "TM" is placed exponentialy to the infinity, whats it ( ∞™ ) means?

It means infinity multiplied by itself trademark times, of course.

On reflection had the XBox 360 have been called XBox 2 the naming of this and future ones would be a whole lot easier

And Xbox 3 would have sounded inferior to PS4... Don't you get why they called it 360?

Infinity + 1, wins every schoolyard game

Infinity +2
Infinity * 2
Infinity! (Factorial)
Infinity^Infinity
Infinity^(Infinity+1)

Oh how I could go on...

So True...

Oh no. The visual studio infinity is now a weird abomination of a purple inverted hourglass, or something. This infinity is much better.

Agreed. I'm fine with "Modernizing" the icons, but why change the perspective too? Ugh.

Wow, if it were trending on just twitter or just reddit I might be a little skeptical, but trending on BOTH? Plus its own Forbes contributor article? There's no way this isn't real!

Who actually thought it would be called the Xbox 720? That was just a temporary name brought up until we had the final name.

I hoped it would be...I like progressive names. PS1-PS2-PS3-PS4 for example.

To me, it's akin to going full retard when you start PSP then go PS Vita for example...

Infinity isn't bad though as I can think of it visually, and 360/infinity can both be seen as a circle

BT Infinity ?

I don't think you would be permitted to trademark the work "infinity"... Too broad. If you'll notice above, the TM is after Xbox and the Infinity symbol. So, if it is XBox Infinity, the entire phrase is TM'd...

I like the name actually! Better than 720

I think that is a sick name for a console and am hoping this is not complete bogus! Has a way better ring than ps4.

It would have never have been called 720 anyway, the name makes absolutely no sense. The media just gave it that name so they had a name to refer to it. 720 also implies 720p resolution (like current Xbox 360) when games on this will more than likely be 1080p.

Are we sure that's an infinity symbol... and not just an "8" turned sideways. You know, because the new Xbox runs on Windows 8. Or... I guess it could be both... an 8 and an infinity symbol.

"Infinite entertainment. Infinite Possibilities".

It is both indeed, as it runs on the kernel of Windows 8, which will make it an absolute dream for developers to release games on 3 platforms at once.
Calling it Xbox 8 would be out of place and this way it sounds a lot cooler, heck Windows Infinity would have sounded a lot cooler, come to think of it. But then that would have been illogical as it was a clear successor to Windows 7 (still a revision of kernel 6 though).

I am not so sure about that. It's all nice and dandy now but what would you call next Xbox? Xbox infinity dot 2? I'm still rooting for the name just 'Xbox' in all modern style font.

A Windows release is always a revision of the kernal. Just because they step it to a new major version doesn't mean any more or less work went into it.

Yes of course, wasn't claiming otherwise, I was only referring the numbering.
Every new major Windows release until now has changed the kernel numbering to a major revision number as well, until Windows 7 (not counting XP64), which I just found odd as it was still quite improved over Vista.

I agree that I doubt it would have been called 720. But Microsoft, themselves, gave it that name. If you watch the Movie Real Steel (w/ Hugh Jackman), you see Xbox 720 ads all over the movie.

The current Xbox 360 is 1080p.

sorry but there aren't many truly 720/1080p games.
They are usually upscaled from something really low.

It always saddened me they did this for so many games. On the bright side that means next generation is going to be steps ahead just by being directly 1080p instead of scaling, even before you add all the other stuff =P
