Samsung to make "big" announcement September 1

Smartphone and tablet maker Samsung has been busy over the summer launching its Galaxy S II smartphone in Europe and Asia and selling millions of units in the process. The company also launched the 10.1 inch screen version of its Galaxy Tab. That tablet has been the subject of a big patent battle between Samsung and Apple that has resulted in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 being banned from sale in Australia and also banned, and later un-banned, from most of Europe. For its part Apple is aiming to get all of Samsung's smartphones and tablets banned from Europe.

Now Boy Genius Report is claiming that Samsung is prepping for what it is calling a "big" announcement on September 1. Samsung is being pretty cagy on exactly what will be revealed but is teasing us with a couple of YouTube videos that, well, don't really give us any clues. You can check out one of the teaser videos below. The report speculates that the announcement might be a new version of the 7 inch screen Galaxy Tab tablet with an improved touch screen and the 3.0 Honeycomb version of the Android operating system inside. However it also says that it might be the reveal of a brand new smartphone from the company.

A recent leak has supposedly hit the Internet recently that shows off Samsung's product launches for the end of the year which include nine Android based phones along with a Windows Phone 7 based device.

O ****. I don't know why I didn't realize this before?
There are a lot of waves in the video.

Waves... Waves.
Does this mean Bada? That would suck.

Following the phenomenal success of the Samsung Galaxy S II, a handset that has outsold the Apple iPhone 4 in the UK over the past three months to become the nation's favourite smartphone, Samsung is expected to unveil another industry powerhouse with the repeatedly leaked Android Ice Cream Sandwich handset a likely candidate.

Tipped as sporting a 1.4GHz dual-core processor the mooted Samsung Ice Cream Sandwich handset is expected to launch as the next Nexus device with Android 2.4 and monstrous 4.65-inch 720p HD display.

Other tech offerings expected to be made by Samsung at this year's IFA expo include a revamped 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab with the second-generation device to boast a Retina style display.

Thing is, would Samsung be the ones to announce the next Nexus phone? I'd have thought that would be up to Google..

I don't care a bit about the typical android soap-shaped mingers... just give us some interesting WP7 devices but please not the cheap plastic crap like SGS2.

i am not expert on samsung or andriod devices, but if you pause the video at 00:29 ,

and look inside the paper bag it says something ( PAOKER ) ?? not sure if that makes any sense or gives us some clue

I reckon it'll have something to do with the fact that they hired the lead developer on the Cyanogen Mod, possibly their own custom version of Android

There's no way they'd hype that up this much. The developer is good but not THAT good

"Samsung has been busy over the summer launching its Galaxy S II smartphone in Europe and Asia and selling millions of units in the process" mmm why the Galaxy S II is already available here in Mexico?

So this should be taken with a grain of salt. I was not in this meeting. Everything I'm writing is 3rd party.

One of my former students works for BB. They were scheduled to have a TP training this am that got changed to a future of webOS meeting by HP.

The HP rep told BB employees that the TP hardware was holding back the performance of webOS. HP knew this and has been in talks with both HTC and Samsung. He mentioned Samsung an HTC being upset with Google and that they were both interested in making webOS phone and tablets. He noted HTC's contract with Beats Audio.

The HP rep said the 'fire sale' was not the original plan but that losses are being considered advertising expenses. "Once you use webOS we believe you won't want to use anything else." Estimated 2 million TP would sell in the 'fire sale.'

The HP rep was very optimistic. He left saying watch for an announcement within the next two weeks about a hardware partner. Possibly both HTC and Samsung.

The Best Buy employees all left 'excited' about webOS's future feeling like they were in the mist of something very big!

Just telling you what I've heard. Hope its true. I'm not trying to sell false hope here.

It should be noted that the meeting lasted 6 hours!

You're all wrong, Samsung is going to announce they're buying HP's PC devision. Srs.

that would be awesome!

HP CEO did say explicitly that PC business spin-off may be decided in around 18 months time. They'll see how things progress, and by that I think they mean, how Windows 8 will turn out for them. However I would like them to buy the WebOS department, because that would be cool.
But this event is more likely to be a Windows Phone event, I think.

Digital you maybe know of any previous videos they did for some other product? If they did similar thing before that is.

With all the waves, 1 would think it's a new Samsung Wave phone. Or maybe Wave Tab. But that's just going by the video, I am not really following their development.

yahyahyah, a new Bada phone would make sense...

It's big because the only phone that really matters is the SGS2, which is the only android phone right now in terms of reputation and sales that can hold its own against the iphone, whose impending launch is later next month.

Adding a few WP7 would definitely be welcome as I would love to see the OS working on some good hardware and hopefully expand its user base over the holidays.

On Verizon, The HTC Thunderbolt outsold the Verizon iPhone for two months. Eventually when more 4G phones started coming out (Droid Charge, LG Revolution) the combined total of these phones outsold the iPhone. I predict the Droid Bionic will outsell the iPhone 4 and most likely the iPhone 5 if it doesn't have 4G (most likely it won't).

And one line in the video says - Download unpacked application from Samsung Apps and Android Market.

Makes it highly unlikely that WP7 is going to be the focus of this announcement.

With Android on the top, I don't think WP7 has a lot to do in this event

I know, reading some of the comments here makes me laugh. For Samsung, Android makes more money than WP7. The "Big" news is 99.99% Android related.

And Apple has an announcement planned for September 2... that they're suing Samsung for whatever they announce September 1.

And Microsoft has a patent license deal offer for them on September 3.

Well HTC has an event September 1st... I believe a big launch on Mango phones is coming.
Hopefully. I'm waiting for a time table of carriers updating to Mango like Microsoft did with NoDo, just so we know how far are we from getting Mango on our phones.

One can hope. I want to know when my Trophy will get Mango. I can't wait! LOL

I was thinking the same thing.

I don't mean to be a troll but if it's gonna be a big launch as rumoured it's almost definatly gonna be an Android focused event, Samsungs WP's may be good but as a percentage of Samsung sales there probably not to important :-/

Well they're unlikely to say it's going to be a minor announcement, are they?

Nope but it wouldn't be something that we have to be notified a week in advance, it will just be in the news as a press release if it is regarding WP7. I'm not trying to antagonize you or any body that likes WP7, but Android is much bigger news for Samsung than WP7. Very few people at this point and time care about WP7. Even Mango is not a big deal to HTC, Samsung and whoever else that does both WP7 and Android. There simply isn't any hype. Sorry. But I predict Android news.
