SkyDrive gets a new, smaller feature; shortlinks

Microsoft’s SkyDrive has been getting a lot of attention recently, after revamping the service and pushing out new applications, the service is aiming to become your preferred cloud storage service. But just because they have pushed out some major changes recently, this doesn’t mean they are done with the product; far from it.

The SkyDrive team has linked up with bit.ly to offer new shortened URLs - a lot shorter, 40% shorter to be exact according to their post. The previous SkyDrive links were a bit of the fail-whale variety as some of them were too long to fit in to a single tweet, a bit of an issue when trying to share something on Twitter.

Like other bit.ly links, you can also track the stats of your links by adding the + sign to the end of link. You also have the ability to use your own custom domain to shorten the links and the links do support OpenGraph.

While the new service is not a breakthrough in terms of usability or features, it is one more small enhancement to the service that will help it remain appealing in the market which is quickly becoming highly competitive with corporate juggernauts.

I still prefer DropBox, its integration with the context menu on Windows is great for me and its really quick for me to get links to folders / files where ever they are in my DropBox

Is there a way to "log off" from the Windows explorrer "SkyDrive" app? Thanks

Right click the skydrive app in the system tray click settings select the about tab click unlink skydrive at the bottom it will bring up a sign in window that you can close and reopen when you restart the program. Also, once you unlink you have to delete the files in the skydrive folder (because they are still there) so that it doesn't sync those files with another account if you sign in with another one.

I really like SkyDrive, but it needs a custom folder location. I don't want it on my 120GB SSD.

When you set it up it asks you where to put it. You can also change the location in the settings. Perhaps don't just blindly click Next on install prompts next time?

I would like an option to just link content not a complete sync as well.

Can you right-click a file or folder in the SkyDrive app and get a public link that way? That's one of two things keeping me from changing from Dropbox. The other is upload speed.

that's still missing feature as well as any SkyDrive specific commands, like Dropbox has. also it's a bit a pain the ass to obtain direct links and they are still way too long.

I heavily utilized SkyDrive last semester due to group projects and shared quite a few links. They were huge! This is very nice to see.

Would be great if i could sync my skydrive on my WIndowsPhone and when i plug it into a computer it would show up as a removal drive!

With all these new features and the 25GB of free storage, SkyDrive is a sure winner among the cloud storage alternatives (Dropbox, iCloud, Amazon Cloud).

As long as you already have an account. Otherwise its 7GB of storage.

True. I had an old Hotmail account which I'd never used, but when I heard about the SkyDrive improvements I just signed in and upgraded from 7GB to 25GB.

Yeah, same here. I made mine when live.com was new, so I'm quite lucky to have deadcell@live.com

Just claimed my free 25gb. And with MS office for symbian belle which can sync data with skydrive acount, it is awesome!

And now you're also lucky enough to have a few thousand spam bots sending your crap. Posting your email unobscured publically on the internet is a very good method to get endless spam.

Nah, their anti-spam has improved to be at least on part with Google's. My inbox continues to remain clean.

I got only 1 SPAM message in past 6 months. Live mail is indeed improved.
