Warner Bros. hiring undercover anti-pirates

TorrentFreak reports that Warner Brothers UK is hiring college students with an IT background to participate in an internship that will pit them against the world wide pirating web in an effort to crack down on illegal digital distribution.

The posting found at the University of Manchester reads:

"During the 12 month internship, duties will include: monitoring local Internet forums and IRC for pirated WB and NBCU content and in order to gather information on pirate sites, pirate groups and other pirate activities; finding new and maintaining existing accounts on private sites; scanning for links to hosted pirated WB and NBCU content and using tools to issue takedown requests; maintaining and developing bots for Internet link scanning system (training provided); preparing sending of infringement notices and logging feedback; performing trap purchases of pirated product and logging results; inputting pirate hard goods data and other intelligence into the forensics database; selecting local keywords and submitting local filenames for monitoring and countermeasure campaigns and periodically producing research documents on piracy related technological developments. Various training will be provided."

The intern will literally be on the front-lines of the epic battle against pirated content, ensnaring users in incriminating transactions, issuing takedown requests, and causing general frustration amongst the file-sharing population on the Internet.

TorrentFreak is actively encouraging members to sign up for the position in an effort to place a double agent inside the copyright infringement department at WB.

I don't understand why these corporations don't understand that this is where they are truely losing money. Piracy only robs them of fantasy money. When they use their our money to fight piracy they are also making people not want to give money to them, I'd much prefer my money completely bypassed the corps and went straight to the people who actually created the film, TV show or song that I liked.

Beaten up in college? Sounds like high school (or earlier) you're talkin' about. Not really a tough choice if that's the concern =/

i would gladly participate if the laws weren't that harsh.
just cannot justify giving someone so much trouble over some files that aren't even classified or anything.

So their spending money to catch people who can barely afford to see their films. I think all these firms are just wasting money, how much cash has the RIAA wasted ?

Why don't they start making actors work, these companies are to willing to spend basically billions a year on wages to actors like will smith who makes something like £30-100m a movie, theirs your loss not people who are seeing copies of your movies.

As long as their making a hefty profit they have no moral reason to be doing this except their illusion that it will generate more profit.

If the movie is good people will go to the cinema and buy the dvds and the blu rays, get rid of the bull**** actors, most of them have no passion to make a good movie.

Companies should not running our life's and controlling our governments which is what they have been doing from the very start of mega businesses. Look at hemp vs oil wars, they made hemp illegal so it would not threaten their oil businesses. Eventually people might let them get so much control they might just be able to censor the internet and fill it just with their content taking more from the poor and giving more to the rich and keep the lower classes working hard to support their capitalism structure.

Evil only prevails when good men do nothing.

Couldn't say it better myself. I do have to add one thing though, stupid effing snitches. Hated them at school, hate them at Uni and now, I hate them over the net. Bloody too good doers trying to make everyone's life a misery since they can't work their way up like everyone else and have to shoot their so-called mates in the back to do so.

Well said. Take solace in that fact that CG technology is approaching the point were people such as Will Smith can be replaced with a motion-captured, computer model. In a decade, certain stars will have less bargaining power.

Cameron was right to make Avatar without any "A-Listers" in the cast, in order to keep the, already astronomical, production costs down. The movie certainly didn't suffer (although Sam Worthington's delivery was awful at times) due to Tom Cruise's absence.

Lol...Many good points. Just the other day I was explaining to colleagues, how hemp was outlawed to stop competition with the oil industry!

I am not sure if you have heard about theatres now raising the prices of 3D movies? I mean seriously! They have a good thing going, making tonnes of money, but their greed will kill this off, as theatre attendance numbers will eventually fall...but then again, its those damn pirates fault!!!

Seems to me that they are training people in the ways that they catch pirates. When the internships are done the interns will have a very intimate knowledge of how pirates are found and by what means. This will be very useful to other pirates because of their insider information. I foresee a huge backfire on this one.

When will they learn?

"Overall, found the study, illegal behaviour has increased by 3%"

Every time they bring attention to these matter, usership increase.

In Belgium, downloading copyrighted movies/games/... is forbidden BUT there is no such law where you can be punished for downloading this kind of copyrighted material. But that's Belgium.

In the Netherlands uploading is illegal but not downloading. I guess before collapse of the cabinet they were trying to make downloading illegal too.

Well the way torrents work is that you are uploading as you are downloading. Unless of course you set your upload bandwidth to 0, in which case you are just a leech.

You don't get caught if you know what you're doing.

One who is already well connected and can't get a job elsewhere. Students need money.

Except that it's actually an internship, so whoever signs up won't get paid a single penny!

Sure I'm against this but I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say I wouldn't take the job when offered, when in reality I would

It is a paid internship. 17,500 British pounds

Well, I wouldn't say £17,500 salary for the 12 month is not being paid.

There are lots of paid internships, when I did my Comp Sci internship, I got paid as a full time worker if I was hired for a real job

The difference between a "snitch" and police detective is not so large.

That is, BTW, $26,205 ($2183 a month) or 19,462 euros (1621 euros month)

I'm out of a job, can't pay for MCSE tests and I still wouldn't take the offer from WB. Like getting money from the devil. Nah, think I'll pass. Girls Gone Wild would be more legit than WB

No, I wouldn't. Being a tool of the corrupt media conglomerate would be a job I'd never take.

Anybody who could see the advantage of been a double agent.
