Windows Phone GDR2 update finding its way onto some Samsung ATIV devices

We all get excited when our gadgets and smartphones receive software updates, so news that some folks in Germany are receiving the Windows Phone GDR2 update has made us very happy.

WPArea.de is reporting that many of its readers are receiving update notifications on their Samsung ATIV S devices. Upon hitting update, the phones receive the latest public version of Microsoft’s OS. It seems the update is only live for unlocked Samsung ATIV phones.

The GDR2 update is designed for all Windows Phones and it brings some improvements but no new major features. Xbox Music, Skype, Internet Explorer, Data Sense are some of the services that are getting improvements with this update, but keep in mind that not all features are available everywhere.

While it’s a bit disappointing that only unlocked ATIV devices are receiving this update at the moment, we’re hoping this is a good a sign and the general release is not far behind.

If you’re receiving the GDR2 update notification be sure to let us know in the comments below.

This is another reason why I'm trading in my Lumia for a Galaxy S4. Why do I have to wait for over a year to even get something as simple as the built in radio to work?

Cheers, KPN will be god awful slow again. Still rolling out the last update. This update is comming and I'll have to wait months...

Damn carriers, NOKIA PLEASE OPEN UP NAVIFIRM AGAIN OR GIVE ME A WORKING LOGIN TYVM.

Just checked, nothing yet on 920 EE UK.

And you won't get it yet as Nokia are still testing it. The title of the article clearly states that the Samsung ATIV S is receiving the GDR2 update not Nokia!!!!!

Yes, the update didn't bring a new number on the OS version. This was my first update since I bought this phone last x-mas.

HTC 8S updated last night. It added Clean Temporary Files etc. I guess it's GDR2
Probably HTC 8S has no radio built-in. Can anyone confirm this ?

Seems like they want to try the update on a selected few.... guinea pigs.

Which is pretty common. It's easier to pull back and tweak if need be.

I find it somehow strange that the least sold device is getting the update first While sure it's only for unlocked devices I imagine there are tons of Nokia/HTC unlocked devices out there as well, while Samsung is not putting any effort what so ever into WP they are the "chosen" ones.

Maybe Samsung received the update and passed it on. Hopefully Nokia won't take long to add their own features to the upgrade and publish the update too

this could simply be due to Samsung applying very little, if any, custom code that needs checking. Nokia will need to test quite a bit as they have both more models and custom code.

Which my understanding was preinstalled on the 925... So I take that to mean it's ready, so we should be seeing this update soon.

Not really acceptable for a "premier" partner like Nokia though, is it. They should have had the update ready to go by now.

I'm not worried though as I have an unlocked Samsung ATIV S

Nokia are bundling GDR2 with another release which explains why they're taking longer.
