Zune 4.7 released, Zune goes international and brings WP7 support

Today Microsoft has released a new version of the Zune PC Software bringing it up to version 4.7. The new software brings a few new features and most significantly adds support for the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 devices. This is ahead of press conferences being held around the world later today in which Microsoft is expected to announce Windows Phone 7’s availability and the devices that will be on sale at launch.

The new Zune software is now fully supported internationality. It brings features such as Smart DJ and Zune Pass access to users in all countries where Windows Phone 7 will be supported. Previously the Zune PC Software was only officially supported in the United States; it has taken Microsoft years to bring the full experience of their entertainment platform to other countries. It is now possible for people to access the “Zune Social” from the software and sign in using their Windows Live ID allowing them to keep track of what their friends are listening too and favourite specific artists and songs.

It is also possible to browse the Windows Phone 7 apps that are already in the Marketplace through the new Zune software. The marketplace is thought to launch with about 2000 apps with a lot more to follow soon after. There are already some Xbox Live games and most genres already have apps for sale or for free. Apparently there is also the obligatory “fart app” already in the marketplace.

Over the weekend new features were added to zune.net for people outside of the US however many things are still not working correctly on the website. Perhaps later today Microsoft will announce updates to the Zune website. Neowin will be covering the London Windows Phone 7 launch event later today and we will be live blogging all the announcements.

Users can get the latest version of the Zune software by updating their current Zune software in the settings menu. It is also possible to download the latest version Zune PC Software from Microsoft Download.

I only have 2 issues, both of which might be region related, artist pictures no longer show in now playing mode and the Podcasts category in the marketplace doesn't show up.

Wonder if it will be available in Portugal soon. I'm currently using my machine set to UK to use it but many things on Zune.net aren't working.

Buggy? Ugly? What? Have you actually used it since V2?

My mom tried the zune software with her 4 gig zune I bought her. she HATED the zune software and I agree, very confusing.

How is it confusing...You click collection and then on the left side you have your artists..in the center you have your albums..and on the right you have your songs. When you select an artist / album / song the other 2 trees automatically adjust.

If you want to buy songs you click marketplace and search for the artist / album / song you would like to purchase.

What the hell is so confusing about it? I really don't recall EVER having issues figuring out anything in the software. Even on the device it's simple and easy to use. Tomato tomahto, I guess. *shrugs*

Loving the Zune software - its much better than iTunes. Takes a bit to get used to but I find it more user friendly. I'm currently subscribing to Napster for £5 p/m with 5 free downloads and might ditch that and join Zune for £8.99 p/m with 10 free downloads. The software is much better than Napster and looks like it gets updated quite frequently, which is something Napster are not good at doing!

I will probably download it later and try for myself but can you add podcasts to playlists now? The fact you have not been able to is stupid. That is all I listen to and I will be damned if I am ever going to buy a Zune/WP7 device if I can't list them all (podcasts only) in acceding order of release date.

I don't understand why MS have both Zune software and Windows Media Player. Can't they just merge them?

yeah i'm thinking about that as well

This is great news. I'm glad that Zune is finally going international (Though they didn't much have a choice with WP7 on the horizon). I will install Zune when I get my phone (Which I have to wait for Verizon to get unfortunately)... But I really can't wait.

Well if you can't wait, download it now and get everything set up for WP7!!!

We have some cry babies in here don't we? With 1TB drives costing less than $60.00 bucks and people want to complain about a couple hundred MB's? Seriously?

Or probably you two are using the older hard disk technology while I am using a not so big but high performance SSD.

OK; it seems no Zune Pass in Germany. So, not in every country where Win 7 Phone is available. You guys had me excited for a second

Darrian said,
Did they change it back so it doesn't **** up your libraries?

You have the option to manage your Zune libraries separate from your Windows 7 libraries now.

They recently updated it so that it 1) added a podcasts to your Windows libraries that you cannot remove without uninstalling Zune and 2) changing the path of your Zune library automatically adds changes your Windows library, whether you want it to or not. They're inextricably tied together now. As an example, let's say I have several subfolders in my music library. I have one for mp3s, one for flacs, one for aac, etc. Let's say I want only the contents of the aac folder in my Zune library, so I input for my music library in Zune C:\User\Music\AAC. This will also change my Windows library so that it will now point to C:\User\Music\AAC instead of C:\User\Music and I won't be able to see the other folders in my music folder when I browse to that library in explorer.

Thanks for letting me know, maybe I can go back to using it now (although I do still yearn for CAD support).

Disappointed that most songs are 115 Microsoft Points which is about 99p, they should be 79p at the most.

Just use the zune pass? gives you 10 songs a month that you can keep, and unlimited songs that you can download and use as long as your sub is active =/

Oddly enough in the US the songs cost 79-99 points =/ Maybe its because of your VAT.

The "Keep 10 songs a month" with the Zune Pass is stupidly US only. Napster walks all over it with the ability to keep songs each month and more varied tier prices. Microsoft missed the boat right there.

Hmm, conflicting.

Keep 10 MP3s per month feature available to U.S. Zune Pass subscribers only, on their PC or Windows Phone 7.

Was going to say im sure i read it that the uk dont get the songs to keep but on the software it does say that we get 10 song credits per month. hopefully we do as that makes it worth it imo. hope it isnt a mistake in the port over from the US version.
could do with this being cleared up.

Works fine for me, signed up for a trial 14 day account and am currently downloading and streaming music.

Some features not working though, the channels section throws an error..

Same for me with the channels.

Can't get it to install.
Does the pre-check OK but keeps crashing with same error as above. Interstingly the x64 setup is only 61mb compared to the 551mb of the x86 one???

I get the same problem It won't install, giving me the same error

I'm annoyed because I don't have time to look into it more and try to download all of the software it mentions in that link.

Grr

I tried all the different downloads and even used Microsoft Update but they all failed.
Also tried disabling antivirus and using a direct proxy but that didn't help either

Do you have the Zune software open when it is trying to update? Oddly, it didn't close the Zune software when it launched the installer, and the installation failed. I rebooted (it told me to reboot for some reason) and launched the software again. When it started the update, I closed the Zune software and it worked great. Finished in about 2 minutes.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it without the Zune software running and I even tried it without anything running (apart from system processes and vital Windows processes). The one thing I haven't been able to do yet is restart my PC because I'm doing a lot of important work, but hopefully it'll work when I try that. I'm glad to hear it worked for you

I was in the same boat as you. I restarted my PC laptop this morning and it installed in about 5 minutes

awesome downloading now through the software. cant be bothered with the 500mb dl when ive already got it installed. had mine reg hacked to show the marketplace but no need for that now. hope it finally saves my play count

It saves my play count! Finally!
the marketplace picks seem to be a bit odd tho. It cant find Muse or Stereophonics or any of my favorite bands. guess its still being updated or something.
Prices also seem to be a bit on the steep side.
Seems to range from about 95 MSP to 115

I just started the Zune software and it poped up that there's a update, downloading now, it doesn't seem to be taking too long for me. If this is the first time you're installing the software though I can see why/if the size is big, they've been adding things since v2.0.

Come on Microsoft..we've been asking for Equalizers in the zune software ever since it was released. Still nothing.

Apart from that, I'm liking this release..seems smoother and faster than the old version!

Oh. My. God - It's been so freaking long I totally forgot about that! Didn't they promise to add it back at the last big update? Obviously, I've gotten used to the idea that its not there but I would still like to have an equalizer.

It isn't working for me and I'm in the UK with an existing UK ID. for example the Windows Mobile 7 Radio podcast:

http://social.zune.net/Externa...tocol.aspx?pathuri=navigate%3FpodcastID%3D576d7f83-2b2e-4afe-8e89-a20e3746d8c1

Gives me an error in Zune 4.7:

"Sorry the rquested item is not available in your location"

In addition if I look for info on an MP3 track in my collection through Zune (new to me in 4.7 release). It gives "Error: The requested item is no longer available in marketplace".

Most of elements seem to work though

I lost all but two of my podcasts, still had the files though so all I had to do was resubscribe.

Wierd thing is that I don't have access to the podcasts on the marketplace!!!!

holy ****, it's HUGE!

Edit: oh, running update in the existing software is lightening fast,,, woop

Can someone with their machine set to the UK and with a UK Live ID, check if the podcast marketplace is available in the UK yet? I can't access it on the website when logged in with my Live ID, and I am not prepared to try it yet as I had to set my computer to the US to get zune working with my Zune HD I brought while in NY last year.

Yea, just tested. Started downloading Scot Mills Radio 1 podcast. The marketplaces are different.

I was browsing the marketplace, podcasts and all in the Zune software and the region was UK. Works just the same as the region hack to access the US marketplace. It all pretty much works as you would expect.

Trailers have that instant on thing which is quite cool, can look a little fuzzy until it kicks in.

ZuneHD app downloads appear to be broken...

Not broken, just unavailable in your region. Remember Zune HD isn't international. The workaround is easy. Change your Windows regional settings in control panel to the United States, open Zune software again, go to Zune apps, there they are, download as you please. Works with any Windows Live ID. Love my Zune. Go back to your normal regional settings and if you need to download more Zune HD apps, change it back to US, rinse and repeat. Easy.

Don't forget to do that means rebooting the computer. Its not an ideal situation. The software should be intelligent enough to recognise the Zune HD Device, and display the app marketplace.

It's down in the US too. Who knows, maybe they are going to release a few new ones today and it's down for updates/not spill the beans.

Yeah, at the WP7 event I went to there were services that were down at the time as well as they were being worked on. I'm assuming Microsoft is preparing for the launch.

The zune software syncs with the WMP library.

I had the last version of Zune on my machine because I liked the interface. And if I remember right, the installer was somewhere between 100 and 200 MB. This new version is 551MB! Whoa...

I don't see why the size matters? The bigger the installer, the more useful features, when it comes to the Zune software

When extracted, maybe, but the download used to be around 60MB.

Wow, crazy. I just run check for updates within the software, it downloaded and updated pretty quick. Must be some extra software people might not already have to make all the features work but still, crikey. Runs a hell of lot better than iTunes so I'm still happy.

If you get he download through Windows Update, it's usually around 50-60MB. Downloading it through the web, you can end up downloading both x64 and x86, all the prerequisites, whether you need them or not. Which is why it's so big.

probably didnt have silverlight, visual c++ etc. stuff needed to run zune before hand

Calum said,

It matters when it's half a gig for one program.

Panda X said,

If you download the full installer it has the latest firmware, the x86 and x64 versions of the software and all of the pre-requisites. So yes, half a gig seems excessive, but considering it's everything rolled into one download it's not a bad size.

FYI, the x86 version is 103 MB and the x64 version is 61.1 MB for software only!!!
