Call of Duty: Vanguard launched in 2021 and wasn"t as well-received as other entries in the popular franchise. It was filled with bugs and performance issues. It"s clear that the game needed more time and it seems like Activision wants to prevent a flawed launch in the future.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Activision has decided to delay Call of Duty 2023 by a year. It should launch sometime in 2024. Keep in mind that this is next year"s title, and the sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, possibly called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, unless they change the name, should release in Fall 2022 as originally planned.
It"s great to see Activision taking the feedback it received for Call of Duty: Vanguard to heart and giving other Call of Duty developers more time with their games. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way games are developed. Many studios have adopted work-from-home models that naturally cause delays. Hopefully, Call of Duty 2023 will be a polished experience at launch unlike Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Activision reached out to Neowin and provided us with the following statement. It seems like Call of Duty 2023 was never expected to release that year. However, the question remains whether Activision would"ve delayed the game had a deal with Microsoft not been on the cards.
We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year, and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.
In January 2022, Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Activision Blizzard for around $70 billion. The deal is expected to go through in late 2022 or early 2023 barring any issues from regulatory authorities in the United States and Europe.
