However, it"s possible that you are only looking to upgrade some components, as you may already be in possession of the rest. Likewise, you may alraedy have bookshelf speakers or floorstanding tower speakers that are serving well as the system"s front speakers, but you wished you had more bass output. The 12-inch will dig deeper and produce significantly more sub-bass (below 60Hz) than the 8-inch model. However, the latter is great for adding mid-bass thump and some sub-bass to a bookshelf system. And it"s also more compact which is great if space is limited.
A key difference in the design of the two is that the R-120SW is front firing while the R-80SWi is down-firing. The down-firing style tries to compensate lower driver size by hitting the rumbles on the ground, sort of trying to create the ground-shaking bass effect, though a downside is that it becomes limited to near-field listening mainly. The front firing units however move lots of air and are better for long-throw systems.
