AMD, being the powerhouse behind the next generation of gaming consoles, is no surprise, with both Microsoft and Sony already working with the semiconductor giant. However, now we have a launch target, at least for the next Xbox, thanks to AMD CEO Lisa Su.
In AMD"s latest earnings call, Su stated that the company"s work on the semi-custom system-on-a-chip (SoC) for Microsoft"s next Xbox is going well and that a launch can happen in 2027.
"Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027," said the CEO. It was around six months ago that Microsoft and AMD announced a "strategic multi-year partnership" to develop Xbox consoles and other devices.
The current generation Xbox Series X and Series S consoles will be entering their seventh year of service in 2027. Keep in mind that the Xbox One was also active for seven years before the Xbox Series X|S generation landed. Of course, with all the RAM and other component shortages going on across the world, a delay for the next-generation console releases could happen.
There are also rumors circulating that the next Xbox will function both as a premium console and a PC, letting players jump into games from both platforms with ease.
AMD did not mention anything about Sony"s next console during the new call. The company is also the hardware partner for the PlayStation maker.
Another piece of console news that Lisa Su dropped at the earnings call was about Valve"s new Steam Machine, which will also be powered by a semi-custom SoC from AMD. Su said that Valve is on track to release its Linux-powered machine in early 2026, reiterating what the original announcement said last year. Unfortunately, the pricing for the hardware is still unconfirmed, with many fans fearing an overpriced machine due to all the part shortages and price hikes.
