Apple sends out invites for March 21 event; 4-inch iPhone and new iPad expected

Apple has sent out invites for a media event to be held on its campus in Cupertino, California later this month.

Invites for the event, which will take place on March 21, include the tagline "Let us loop you in", which doesn"t exactly give much away. Nonetheless, thanks to various leaks in recent weeks, we already have a reasonable idea of what the company is planning to announce.

Perhaps the most greatly anticipated reveal will be a new smaller iPhone, which will slot into Apple"s handset range below the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The device - which is believed to be called the iPhone SE - is expected to start at around $450, featuring a compact design and 4-inch display. Replacing the iPhone 5s, it will reportedly include an updated processor, the same 8MP (rear) and 1.2MP (front) cameras as the iPhone 6, networking components from the iPhone 6s, and NFC support for Apple Pay.

A new iPad is also expected, although it"s not yet clear if this will be a direct replacement to the iPad Air 2, which made its first appearance in October 2014. Along with various hardware updates - which are said to include a 4K display, 4GB of RAM, up to 128GB of storage and improved speakers - the device will reportedly have a Smart Connector. This has fuelled rumors that - rather than being a straight-up successor to the Air 2 - it will be positioned as a smaller version of the iPad Pro, perhaps even with Pencil stylus support.

Alongside the new phone and tablet, the Apple Watch is expected to get a software update, as well as various new straps/bands for the device.

Apple may still have "one more thing" to surprise us with, but we"ll have to wait until March 21 to find out.
