Following a rather short teaser period, EA has officially released its Battlefield battle royale experience. Titled Battlefield REDSEC, it is primarily a 100-player battle royale, but there is also the squad-based competitive mode Gauntlet as well as Portal access included in the massive free-to-play package.
The map of REDSEC is Fort Lyndon, the biggest arena ever made for a Battlefield game. The 100 players that parachute into the map for the battle royale will be split into four-player squads, with the final team remaining being the victor of the match. Just like in the mainline entry that released just a couple of weeks ago, Battlefield 6, destruction is a big component of the map, with everything from walls to entire buildings being fully destructible.
Battlefield Studios is saying that it has crafted the map to offer everything from close-range gunfights inside buildings to long-range vehicular warfare seamlessly. There are nine major points of interest that players can loot for high-grade resources, while 16 other points offer more gear and fights across the map.
As expected for a battle royale, the map will slowly shrink as the round progresses, covering the arena with a ring of fire that will almost instantly kill anyone crossing it. While players can customize and select a class when jumping in, looting is how they can unlock additional abilities, gadgets, call-ins and more for gaining the upper hand.
"The next chapter of our Battlefield universe launches today with Battlefield REDSEC, our new experience that includes Battle Royale crafted with the series’ explosive DNA, to our cutthroat squad competition mode Gauntlet, and even new ways for our community to build and experience Portal," said Byron Beede, General Manager of Battlefield. "REDSEC is everything you love about Battlefield – destruction, intense combat, vehicular carnage – in a new, massive playspace that’s free for everyone to experience."
Aside from battle royale, REDSEC also lets players go into more standard gunfights in the Gauntlet mode. This is an eight-squad mode with standard objectives players can accomplish across the map with multiple lives and multiple rounds. Lastly, the scripting and map customization mode Portal is here in REDSEC too, offering players Fort Lyndon as their newest sandbox.
Battlefield REDSEC is now available for free across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms.
