The "one last thing" announcement to come out of Gamescom Opening Night Live event today was a surprise from Game Science. Instead of an expansion for Black Myth: Wukong, like many expected from the studio, the Chinese developer announced a full-fledged sequel: Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Watch the cinematic trailer above, which unfortunately does not have any gameplay.
Replacing Wukong, Zhong Kui comes in as the brand-new protagonist. This is a legendary ghost-hunting figure from Chinese folklore, which will offer players new ways to experience the action gameplay the studio is known for. This will also be a single-player experience.
"Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors," said the studio in a blog post regarding the announcement today. "We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things while taking a hard look at our past flaws and regrets."
While Wukong is being left behind, this doesn"t mean the studio has abandoned that storyline altogether. "And to all friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won’t end here," added Game Science. "That said, we’re still exploring and experimenting with the concrete differences between Wukong and Zhong Kui. So take it easy-let us impress ourselves first before we serve it to you."
Black Myth: Zhong Kui does not have a release date attached to it just yet, with Game Science saying that it has no idea when it can finish the project. Considering how early its development is, said to be only an empty folder for now, it makes sense why the studio went for a cinematic announcement trailer.
The title is aiming for a release across PC and all "mainstream console platforms," with no specifics being mentioned.
