China has asked the United States to stop its “unreasonable suppression” of Chinese companies such as Huawei. The request from the Asian country comes just a day after the U.S. announced that it was moving to stymie Huawei’s ability to acquire mobile chips from non-U.S. firms.
According to Reuters, China has said it will defend the legal rights of Chinese firms. The Chinese foreign ministry confirmed this when asked by journalists whether it would take retaliatory measures against the U.S. following the new restrictions on Huawei.
After the U.S. announced the new measures, a report appeared in Global Times which claimed that the Chinese government was ready to put U.S. companies on an “unreliable entity list”. If China goes ahead with the plan, it would see restrictions placed upon firms such as Apple and investigations could be launched against them. China’s plans would also impact industries outside of technology as the country would stop purchasing Boeing airplanes, according to sources.
It’s very unlikely that the current U.S. administration will roll back its plans until it comes to a comprehensive arrangement with China that it deems to be to its advantage. Even before the new measures, there was significant pressure on Huawei with new devices shipping without Google apps nor Google support.
