Excel for web gets new feature that AI-ready users will love

A few months ago, Microsoft announced limited availability of Copilot"s Agent Mode in Excel for the web. This feature was rolled out to Frontier customers, which is basically an umbrella term that Microsoft defined to encapsulate organizations which embrace new AI capabilities as soon as they become available in order to accelerate their growth. Today, the firm has announced the general availability of Agent Mode in Excel for the web.

Microsoft touts that this latest enhancement supercharges Copilot in Excel from being a basic assistance tool to one that powers agentic experiences. This is because Agent Mode enables multi-step workflows that can apply changes directly to the Excel workbook. Additionally, you can verify and validate the steps that Copilot performs for delegated tasks, so that there is full transparency.

The Redmond tech giant has emphasized that Agent Mode in Excel is very different from a traditional chatbot. It can generate content in workbooks using knowledge grounded in the Excel file and the web, and run various models to handle predictions for advanced scenarios. Agent Mode can also autonomously run analysis on large datasets, fix broken formulas, generate new formulas, and build visualizations that update automatically based on the underlying data connected in the workbook.

In terms of availability, Agent Mode is now generally available in Excel for the web, and this rollout will extend to Windows and Mac next month. Here are some other pertinent details:

  • Language support: English (US), Spanish (Spain, Mexico, Japanese, French (France, Canada), German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Chinese (Simplified).; additional languages to follow.
  • Web search: Outputs are grounded in web data when needed. File grounding and Work IQ support are planned for early 2026 to enable richer work context.
  • Licenses: Available for commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. Coming in January to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers.

If you"re an eligible customer, you can try Agent Mode in Excel for the web using the Tools menu.
