Following Teams outage, Microsoft broke Outlook email. More details out.

Earlier today, Microsoft confirmed a Teams outage which made the meetings inaccessible. However, the scale of the outage was not massive and the company was able to resolve the issue rather quickly. You can find the timeline of the events in its dedicated article here.

However, that was not the end of Microsoft 365 issues, unfortunately. Following the smaller Teams outage, Microsoft later confirmed that Outlook was not accessible across the web, the desktop and mobile clients. Thus, it is broken everywhere no matter how you try to access it.

The Microsoft Service Health page described the issue initially as:

Title: Users may be unable to access their mailbox using any connection methods

User impact: Users may be unable to access their mailbox using any connection methods.

More info: Impacted connection methods include, but may not be limited to:

  • Outlook.com
  • Outlook Mobile
  • Outlook desktop client

Current status: We"ve identified that users may be unable to access their mailboxes using any connection method. We"ve determined that a portion of mailbox infrastructure isn"t performing as efficiently as expected, resulting in impact. We"re investigating this further to better understand the issue and help inform our next troubleshooting steps.

Unlike the Teams issue, which was resolved quickly, Microsoft struggled to deal with this one for a while; though about an hour earlier, the company seems to have finally deployed the most apt fix. The two most recent current status updates confirm this:

We"ve determined the cause of the issue and have started deployment of a fix. We expect the fix to take an extended period following our safe change management process.

.....

Our deployment of the fix is progressing quicker than anticipated and we expect impact to gradually mitigate as it progresses. We believe the issue will be resolved by our next update time.

We will update the post once Microsoft confirms the issue is completely resolved.
