GameStop to offer in-store pre-orders for PC game downloads

If you are a PC gamer but still prefer to spend your money on games in stores the old fashioned way, GameStop now has an interesting compromise. The game retailer announced today in a press release that it has started a new program that will let people pre-order downloadable PC games in GameStop"s brick and mortar stores. GameStop customers can reserve upcoming PC games with cash, credit, or game trade in credits at its stores and then download the games when they are released from the comfort of their home.

The first PC game offered by GameStop for this new program is the upcoming cyberpunk RPG title Deus Ex: Human Revolution from developer Eidos Montreal and publisher Square Enix. In-store pre-orders for the downloadable game will also get some extras including downloadable versions of the first two Deus Ex games and a free Explosive Mission DLC pack for the third game. GameStop PowerUp Rewards members will also get double points with the Deus Ex: Human Revolution pre-order and be entered into a giveaway where the grand prize winner will get a living room makeover. The game itself will be released on August 23. GameStop will add more games to this program in the coming weeks.

This move represents the latest in GameStop"s aggressive stance to sell downloadable games and DLC content in both their stores and via their web sites including their own retail website and the Impulse web site. GameStop acquired the Impulse PC game download service from game developer and publisher Stardock earlier this year.
