'Gigantic' developer Motiga shut down by Perfect World

Following a two year long beta, the free-to-play MOBA title Gigantic finally launched back in July on Steam, Arc, Windows 10, and Xbox One. The game was initially supposed to be an Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive with Microsoft serving as the publisher, but Perfect World Entertainment acquired the studio and took over the publishing duties of Gigantic back in 2016.

However, according to Motiga employees, it seems the Washington based studio has now been shut down, with Perfect World laying off almost the entire workforce. In a statement to Destructoid, Motiga CEO Chris Chung confirmed the studio"s closure, saying that it was a "budgetary decision" by Perfect World:

Perfect World as a public company has a profitability goal and they decided to cut parts of the company that were not profitable. In short, Gigantic was not making enough revenue. Unfortunately, Motiga is not the only Perfect World studio being impacted by the decision.

As to what will now become of Gigantic, Chung stated that the free-to-play title will be "left at the hands of a maintenance team composed of few dedicated folks at Motiga." Its highly likely that we will not be seeing any further updates to the title, even though it will remain playable for the time being.
