A super-fast internet connection is more of a requirement than a luxury if you want to watch 4K HDR videos on streaming services or open websites at the blink of an eye, having already seen how the global median internet speed has increased since last year.

We have previously talked about how different countries offer some of the fastest internet speeds. However, you might have wondered what internet speeds are offered by some of the world"s largest cities. The internet speed analytics firm Ookla"s latest numbers can give us an idea of the cities offering the fastest internet as of mid-2025.

The firm"s Speedtest Global Index ranks Lyon, France, as the top spot holder for the fastest median fixed broadband speeds. Here is a summary of how the top ten cities perform:

Rank City Download Speed
1. Lyon, France 347.52 Mbps
2. Abu Dhabi, UAE

344.34 Mbps

3.

Valparaíso, Chile

330.57 Mbps

4.

Beijing, China

303.44 Mbps

5.

Shanghai, China

303.15 Mbps

6.

Bucharest, Romania

303.07 Mbps

7.

Los Angeles, United States

293.53 Mbps

8.

New York, United States

289.56 Mbps

9.

New Taipei, Taiwan

288.57 Mbps

10.

Bangkok, Thailand

276.14 Mbps

So, if you live in the US, Los Angeles and New York are among the cities offering the fastest median download speeds. While New York sits below Los Angeles on the list, it has a higher upload speed of 41.15 Mbps compared to LA"s 23.18 Mbps.

As per the latest data, the global median download and upload speeds for fixed broadband were recorded at 103.09 Mbps and 56.75 Mbps, respectively. It"s interesting to note that New Taipei and Bangkok, despite being at the lower end of the list, offer upload speeds comparable to those of Lyon and Abu Dhabi.

Things get even more dramatic when you check the internet speed numbers for mobile broadband. According to the latest data, the global median download and upload speeds for mobile internet were recorded at 91.79 Mbps and 13.50 Mbps, respectively.

However, Ar-Rayyan in Qatar grabbed the top spot on the list by offering download speeds of 561.48 Mbps. It"s almost 61% higher than the download speeds offered by Lyon for fixed broadband.

One area where wired internet beats wireless is latency. As per the data, the global latency is 8ms for fixed connections and 25ms for mobile internet. That said, here are the top ten cities that offer the fastest mobile internet:

Rank City Download Speed

1.

Ar-Rayyan, Qatar

561.48 Mbps
2.

Doha, Qatar

532.28 Mbps

3. Abu Dhabi, UAE

You will notice that Middle Eastern cities have conquered most of the top spots in the mobile internet space. That"s largely due to the region"s aggressive 5G expansion in recent years. On the other hand, US cities haven"t even made it to the top twenty names on the list. Still, commercial hotspots like Los Angeles and New York recorded download speeds of over 200 Mbps.

It"s worth noting that the speeds mentioned in the Speedtest Global Index are median and may not represent the maximum available internet speed in a particular region. According to Ookla, median speeds provide a more accurate representation of the real-world internet performance for a typical user. They are less likely to be influenced by outliers, for instance, if a small number of users have extremely high-speed connections.
