Google Play gets major personalization update, Games on PC now generally available

Although third-party app stores and APKs are well supported on Android, Google Play continues to be the primary way to get apps for most consumers. Google continuously makes improvements to this piece of software, and now, it has announced a major update based around personalization.

For starters, Google Play Games is unifying the gaming experience so that all your achievements, stats, and AI-generated avatar are centralized. The platform will also serve to connect users to events like San Diego Comic-Con, while also offering a Play Games League for those who are competitive. This league will kick off on October 10 with Subway Surfers being the title to play till October 23.

Additionally, Google is integrating the Gemini Live-powered Play Games Sidekick overlay to offer guidance during your play sessions in real-time. Google Play is also offering revamped Game Detail Pages showcasing information about titles, such as developer promotions, ongoing events, and more. Gamers in select countries will soon be able to ask and answer questions about games through this page.

Another major update this time around is that Google Play Games on PC has finally graduated from their beta status and is now generally available. It offers over 200,000 titles across both mobile and PC, with DREDGE joining the Play Pass Catalog later this month.

All of these updates are being consolidated in the new "You" tab, whose scope will also include other personalized app and content recommendations such as audiobooks. It will allow you to jump into certain content like audiobooks, novels, and podcasts that you have already started without a hitch. This integrated experience in YouTube will begin rolling out in select Play Points markets this week, with more countries being added after October 1.

The App tab is receiving some love too. It will now feature seasonal and entertainment topics in dedicated sections. Korean and U.S. customers will get access to movies, TV shows, and webcomics through this interface. Finally, Guided Search will enable customers to leverage natural language queries like "deck-building games" to surface relevant content through the power of AI.
