Google has announced its biggest Chrome update yet, introducing a host of new AI features and enhancements. As part of this overhaul, the company revealed that its AI-powered browsing assistant, Gemini in Chrome, will soon enter general availability, bringing its conversational smarts to Mac and Windows devices for Google Workspace customers.
The feature integrates the Gemini app directly into the Chrome browser, enabling users to request insights, carry on two-way conversations via Gemini Live, and draw on the context of up to ten browser tabs alongside data from Workspace app.
When it comes to admin controls and availability, Workspace administrators can already configure access ahead of the launch using two key settings. The Gemini app service setting manages the core Gemini app across the web, mobile and Chrome, while the Chrome Gemini Settings option specifically enables or disables Gemini within the browser itself. By default, Gemini in Chrome will be switched on unless an organisation has already disabled the Gemini app service.
The rollout is expected to begin no earlier than 2 October 2025, with availability across most Workspace tiers including Business, Enterprise, Education, Frontline, and Nonprofits. Initially, it will be limited to English-speaking users in the US who are 18 or older.
The tech giant stresses that certain enterprise compliance certifications currently covering the Gemini app, such as HIPAA, SOC, ISO and FedRAMP, do not yet extend to Gemini in Chrome. Furthermore, customers bound by a HIPAA Business Associate Amendment (BAA) will see the feature blocked by default.
As part of the Gemini app, the Chrome integration inherits Google Workspace’s enterprise-grade data safeguards. Google assures content is not reviewed by humans nor used to train generative models outside an organisation’s domain without permission. Full details are available on the Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub.
Usage metrics for Gemini in Chrome will appear in the Admin Console under Generative AI > Gemini Reports, alongside other admin reporting tools such as the Security Investigation Tool.
